Pay attention to the publisher and date!

Unfortunately there were a lot of problems with the Russian translation of this book. The translation initially published by Rosman was hastily made and had a number of errors. The most glaring errors were fixed in the later editions but some minor problems remained.

And a couple of years ago another publisher (Machaon) purchased the rights to the Harry Potter series and for some reason decided to use the amateur translation that circulated on the Internet. And while this translation is true to the source it's written in really poor Russian and I don't recommend it (or any other book of the series published by Machaon) to anyone due to this reason (especially to those who learn Russian).

So, if you want to buy the Russian translation of Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, the best option is probably a newer edition (2007-2013) by Rosman (Росмэн). There are still plenty of them on Amazon - new and used. Or you may skip the first book entirely and go straight to the Chamber of Secrets (again, better find the Rosman edition).

Harry Potter makes it to Russia

I have been reading the Harry Potter novels for ages, and they will always be my favorite. I first read them in English two years ago, since of the two languages I know, English would have to be my better one. But last year, while visiting my family in Russia, I found and bought the translated version of books 1-4.
In my oppinion, the translation wasn't perfect, and not as good as it could have been. Nothing much was changed, but I found a strange loss of humor. I was more than surprised to find that my friends were also reading these books in Russia, and I'm happy with the translation since it's better than nothing. I suggest if you know or are learning Russian, and have read Harry Potter in another language, that you definately buy this book to compare. It's the first book in the series.

Very poor translation

I am a Russian-English translator, and a fan of the Harry Potter books. A friend gave me the Russian version of the first book, and I was quite interested to see how it went. To be blunt, it is poorly translated, and appears to be the result of the Russian publisher hoping to get something on the shelves as soon as possible. A great deal of Rowling's humor lies in her turns of phrase, and the translator made only half-hearted attempts to convey these, if he made the attempt at all. I frequently wondered about his grasp of the English language. Most baffling to me was that the translator changed Neville's pet toad into a turtle--but only on some pages. I cannot recommend this book even as a curiosity, since that would only encourage the publisher to continue putting out shoddy work.

Exciting historical drama! Grabs your attention & doesn't let go!

The premise alone, that two young friends could plan and execute the perfect crime without being caught, seized my attention and did not let go. This non-fiction, historical drama is another example that sooner or later, regardless of who you are, truth trumps lies. Life Plus 99 is a story narrated by one of the pair who participated in the "perfect crime". The gist of the book is in common with things most of us have thought about or perhaps experienced - doing something without being caught. In Life Plus 99, a pair of upper echelon, too smart for their own good, cocky, high school senior boys plan the perfect murder, knowing they will not be caught. They sit back and watch the hub-bub going on and silently smirk and collectively concede how inept the public officials are, since they are stumped. However, unknown to the boys, a pair of eyeglasses belonging to one of them was found at the scene. It does not take a long time to read the prescription and determine whose glasses these belong to, or at least who wears an identical prescription. If you are wealthy, and money is no object, you spare no expense to hire the best there is to defend your child; such, is what we learn provides legal aid to the boys. The most prominent attorneys and judge of the era are shown at their peak, in a different context from the things we know about them. Without giving away too much of the story, the newspapers latched on to the murder mystery, parlaying their information to create a public frenzy!

You know what the boys are going to do. You know the boys do it. You know the boys get caught and are sentenced to prison for life plus 99 years. What you do not know, is what happened to the boys once they were incarcerated. This book answers the questions and provides a glimpse of their life before, during, and after time served behind bars. Eventually, their cockiness is replaced with meekness, pride with humility, and confidence with modesty.

The only regret I have is not knowing what happened "next" - and you will have to read to book to know what "next" means. Life plus 99 is a good, swift, interesting read.

Read it with Leopold's agenda in mind.

I reluctantly recommend this book, as long as you keep in mind what Leopold was trying to accomplish when he wrote it. He had been incarcerated for 30 years, the confessed and widely reviled perpetrator of the "crime of the century". And on top of that, Meyer Levin had recently skewered him (under the pseudonym Judd Steiner) as a brilliant but deeply disturbed teenager, psychologically driven to kill because of his troubled childhood and an obsession with Loeb, in a novelized biography called ''Compulsion". Leopold wrote this book, purportedly, to "set the record straight"; but he did no such thing.

He began with the immediate aftermath of the crime; in other words, he deliberately refused to recount his childhood, or to describe any details of the murder itself. This engendered widespread criticism, and justifiably so in my opinion; because if he really wanted to "set the record straight", he would have at least attempted to refute Levin's hypothesis. I suppose in avoiding the issue altogether he was basically saying that he had no excuses to offer; but some attempt at an explanation would seem to be a minimum requirement for an autobiography of this type.

So why did he write the book? To rehabilitate his public image, by emphasizing all his good works in prison, and completely ignoring the dark side of his past. And indirectly, he hoped to convince the parole board to let him out. He did get out, though it remains a matter of debate whether the book had anything to do with his successful parole application (after numerous failures) in 1958. So the book is worth reading, if you have any interest in the Leopold and Loeb case, and/or life in the rich neighborhoods of Chicago during the Roaring '20s. Just don't expect to learn any of Leopold's true motivations.

His Life in Prison

Life Plus 99 Years

This 1958 book by Nathan Leopold Jr. does not have a Table of Contents for its 26 chapters or an Index to its 381 pages. The ‘Introduction’ was written by Erle Stanley Gardner, famous for his novels and creating “The Court of Last Resort” to free the innocent convicted. Leopold and Loeb killed a younger boy in the belief they were smart enough to get away with murder. Edmund Locard’s principle that any criminal leaves behind and takes away trace evidence was true in this “Crime of the Century”. Most murders are done for money, it is unusual for someone to kill without a motive. Some murders go unsolved (The Hall-Mills or the Borden murders). Gardner asks about the lack of “moral fiber” in this case. Whose fault was that? Parents, teachers, or the vague term of “society”? Gardner does not mention books, radio, or other entertainment.

Were Leopold and Loeb the first teenage murderers? If so, what had changed? Did the teaching of Nietzsche’s “philosophy” affect them? They had wealth and intelligence, but not the low cunning needed to get away with murder [“Where’s Jimmy?”] Richard Loeb volunteered to help the police. Police treatment of suspects was determined by status (p.13). [Is it different today?] Found eyeglasses provided a clue, then their alibi was found to be false. And Loeb confessed (did he want to be caught?). Gardner says environment has an effect. When most people lived on farms teenagers were busy in useful work. Low population density is a factor in crime today. Page 14 has some examples. What happens to “juvenile delinquents” when caught? Some are paroled to parents, others sent to a “youth camp”. The average person has no knowledge of existence in prison, this book tells about prison life (p.17).

What has caused the alarming increase in vicious crimes committed by those under 18? Was it due to modern life (p.18)? Is it due to the parent’s examples? Or a lack of discipline? [If its too much radio and television then the Corporate Media shares the blame.] What can rehabilitation do (p.19)? [There is no mention of “peer pressure” or background. Crime flourishes with poverty. There have been many juvenile murderers since Leopold and Loeb but they did not get the same publicity (p.20). Most of the men in prison are later released; what then? Will they try to “get even”? How can released prisoners be rehabilitated? [What about a WPA project to provide good jobs before anyone commits a crime? Is that too rational?] Gardner does not criticize or even mention corporate controlled entertainment or advertising. Are they blameless?

Leopold’s book begins after the murder. Dick Loeb had a sunny and magnetic personality. [Like some movie stars or politicians?] People liked him, but he was amoral and without scruples. [What caused that?] The police followed all clues and questioned many. They found eyeglasses that were traced to Leopold (he was known to visit the murder scene for birdwatching), he was brought in for questioning. [Don’t good detectives develop hunches from interviewing suspects?] Leopold’s story didn’t check out, then he continued to talk without a lawyer and was put in jail (Chapter 2). He mentioned Dick Loeb’s name, who soon confessed. They confessed freely and corroborated them before witnesses. It was over except for the trial. Benjamin Bachrach and Clarence Darrow were hired as lawyers (Chapter 3). Darrow did not make a favorable impression (at first). [Was this an act to appear like an ordinary guy and appeal to the jury?]

There was a legal reason for the guilty plea. The foremost psychiatrists were hired by the defense (Chapter 4). Evidence of insanity could mitigate the sentence. Darrow read the textbooks to refute the state’s psychiatrists. There was no sex motive (p.77). The judge chose life imprisonment as they were minors (p.78). They were sent to Joliet (Chapter 5). The next chapters tell of his experiences. Leopold volunteered to teach other prisoners (Chapter 7). The weekly routine is described (Chapter 8). He got appendicitis and was transferred to Stateville (Chapter 9). He was sent to the Hole for contraband (Chapter 10). The death of a Deputy exposed the sale of paroles (Chapter 11). A mistake sent him back to the old prison (Chapter 13). He became interested in sociology. He tells his observations on a “hereditary environment” (pp.196-198).

He tells about a riot (p.203). There was a riot in Stateville (Chapter 14). A grievance committee was started but didn’t work out (p.215). Leopold reorganized the Library. A school was started to educate inmates (Chapter 15). He decided the best way to expiate his wrong was to help other people (Chapter 16). Loeb got along with everybody. Sociologists studied prisoners (Chapter 17). Loeb was attacked and died (Chapter 18). He says it was over money. Leopold was isolated for his protection. [He said his conviction as a murderer gave him status!] He said he was punished for an official’s mistake (Chapter 19). He was transferred to the X-ray room then to the hospital (Chapter 20). Prisoners who volunteered were used to test a cure for malaria (Chapter 21). More soldiers were lost to malaria than to enemy bullets. The doctors found a cure.

Volunteers who served their minimum were paroled. His 99-year sentence was commuted to 85 years (Chapter 23). He developed diabetes. When television was allowed there were less mischief. He applied for parole (Chapter 24), and had prominent witnesses (Chapter 25). It was denied and he would have to serve another 12 years. The book “Compulsion” was half fiction, it didn’t use real names (Chapter 26). He applied for a commutation of sentence. The ‘Epilogue’ tells what happened later. Leopold was the youngest in the family and a child when his mother died. Could the lack or care and attention have affected his personality? [William Henry Bonney had a similar experience.] This book describes life in prison. Are things different today?

Two days ago I picked up Dr. Nabeel Jabbour's book, "The Crescent Through the Eyes of the Cross" (NavPress). I intended to go through it little by little. I failed. A few minutes later I was drawn to it again and again and again. Last night I finished it. This morning ... I picked it up again.

Dr. Jabbour, an Arab Christian dedicated to knowing Christ and making Him known was raised in the Middle East. He spent the last six decades of his life walking around inside the skin of Muslims. He wanted to see life from their perspective. He lived with them, worked with them, suffered with them, laughed with them, and drank literally hundreds of gallons of tea with them. This book is the culmination of his life experiences.

In "The Crescent Through the Eyes of the Cross" Dr. Jabbour invites us to journey with him and his friend Ahmad and Ahmad's sister Fatimah. Together they explore Muslims' grievances (both men and women), our own imbalanced prejudices and assumptions, as well as the cause (and solution) of radical Islamic fundamentalism. As we travel the road he unwraps the Gospel and explores the Muslim and Christian worldviews, presenting the person of Jesus in a more sensitive and effective yet Biblical way. The journey ends with hope and doable practical applications.

On every page we smell the gun smoke of Dr. Jabbour's life and ministry. This is not the traditional "Muslim vs. Christian - My way or the Highway" approach. Over the years I have read many books about Islam and Christians relating to Muslims. In my opinion, this is the finest book of that genre I have ever read. If you want an insider's compassionate but objective view to the Islamic culture and practical, field tested solutions then DON'T MISS THIS BOOK!

Feelings and Grievances Examined

In view of the lavish praise offered by prior posts, I feel almost guilty and unspiritual in offering my own rather restrained assessment here. But here goes anyway.

If you are involved in ministry to and among Muslims, then you will find this book to be a most valuable resource. If you are involved in evangelism and missions work in Muslim majority environments, not only will you find this book to be a valuable resource, but you will regard it as a "must read." If you haven't yet looked into the broad frontier of historical issues surrounding Islam, a book like this invites an exploration into the now vast literature on such matters.

Dr. Jabbour's discussion is built upon imaginary characters who bring various indictments against the West and express dissatisfaction at the way Christians view Muslims. These characters are, however, composites of real people known to Dr. Jabbour. This gives the narrative a lively energy, but it does mean that the entire book is anecdotal, and therein lies both its strength and (in my consideration) a weakness. Real people (even if cast collectively into an imaginary synthesis and given an Arab name) are real people who have experienced real things and have real emotions. One cannot question their feelings. The problem I see with this is that the anecdotal materials put forth by Dr. Jabbour can be countered by other anecdotes and testimonies that carry equal authority. The story of Ahmed's "sister" is a case-in-point. Reading her testimony, one would gather that Egyptian Muslim women are enlightened, well-educated professionals who enjoy many benefits from the Islamic culture. What, however, makes her statements more authoritative or reality-based than, say, the writings of Nonie Darwish (also Egyptian), Wafa Sultan (Syrian), or Ayaan Hirsi Ali (Somali)?

The author allows the imaginary "Ahmad" to state his concerns freely,and although the author expresses some misgivings about Ahmad's grievances, for the most part his challenges are very gently stated. Dr. Jabbour's goal is to foster a listening ear among Christians, to allow "Ahmad" to get it all out there in the interests of creating opportunity for dialogue. Again, this is fine if you want to read a personal experience book, but some readers (myself included) might like to see some more clarity as to where Dr. Jabbour thinks Ahmad is overlooking some things. For example, Ahmad indicts the Crusades (an almost default declaration raised against Christianity), but the reader might benefit from clues as to recent revisionist literature concerning that subject that challenge the popularly accepted "facts" communicated in Ridley Scotts's movie about the Crusades, Kingdom of Heaven. But again, that direction is not the author's intention so I won't make too big a point of it. (I don't want to critique the author just because he did not write the book I might be looking for!)

This book is about personal history. As such it is very interesting. It does leave the impression, though, that western concerns about the Islamist and the larger Islamic movement in the world are quite a bit off base, and could be solved by addressing certain "legitimate grievances" in the Muslim world. These grievances center around three points of departure: (1) the Crusades (the default indictment of Christian history automatically raised by just about everybody looking for indictments); (2) western colonialism and its destructive influence on Islamic civilization; (3) the Israel/Palestinian problem. Suffice it to say here that every one of these "legitimate grievances" could meet a response from other anecdotal composite characters who would testify that all of these indictments have their roots in Islamic practice and history itself. This being the case, I'm not sure that the statements of the imaginary "Ahmad" are all that impressive, however one might be inclined to allow them to go unchallenged in the interests of building a relationship. Nevertheless, as an example of lending a respectful listening ear in the interests of building a relationship that could lead to mutual understanding, Dr.Jabbour's book is a fine example.

I also thought the title was just a tad problematic. A more accurate phrasing might state: "The Cross through the Eyes of the Crescent." The book's structure is grounded in the series of indictments brought forth by "Ahmad," which leads Dr. Jabbour to write much about what is wrong with Christians' attitudes. Just for fun, I'll pose another imaginary composite character--let's call him Jake the "redneck Christian" (to appropriate Dr. Jabbour's language), who has some questions of his own for "Ahmad." Regarding the Crusades, the Roman Catholic Church has publically expressed sorrow, repentance, and appealed for forgiveness, over the Crusades, and those wars are generally viewed as an embarrassment by the widest swath of Christians. What more would you like to see? Ahmad, you say that the Crusaders attacked "our" lands over many years. Yes, they did, but how did they become "your" lands in the first place? What made your conquests good and their attempts at re-conquest bad? Ahmad, it is generally acknowledged by many scholars that Islamic civilization--once the greatest civilization in the world--went into precipitous decline long before the rise of the great western colonial states, and that this was a matter of intra-Islamic conflict (this conflict is hinted at, but not pursued here, by Dr. Jabbour). How would you address this historical reality in today's context? And Ahmad, how would you address the reality that thousands of Palestinian Arabs were forced from their homes in the post-WWII years by Palestinian leaders themselves, some of whom were key figures in the conception and execution of the "final solution" jointly favored in the Arab-Nazi alliance of that time?

My point here is that "grievances" are easy to arouse and state. Almost inevitably there's always a balancing one in view that is just as "legitimate" in the mind of the holder as any others. Dr. Jabbour seems to say that hearing grievances is a good place to start; yet the examples he gives of other composite characters--Muslims who came to Christ--seem not to have started out with grievances but are people with a prior and genuine curiosity about Jesus. Thus, the question arises as to whether those examples actually illustrate his starting point with "Ahmad." In any event, my curiosity is aroused as to how one might get beyond the grievance utterance. At some point this has to happen.

Given these criticisms, the book nevertheless arouses very interesting questions from "Ahmad." A couple stand out especially. Why couldn't one consider, for example, whether the Hebrew hero Samson was a "terrorist" (especially from the Philistine perspective)? Of even more weight is the question as to why Christians feel closer to Judaism than to Islam, given Islam's respectful position toward Jesus and his works, his Virgin Birth, and prophetic power? Of special value is the author's clarification of what is probably a big misunderstanding, and that concerns comparisons between Jesus and Mohammed. That is not the comparison to be made, Ahmad says. The more direct and appropriate parallel would be Christianity's affirmation of Jesus as God's perfectly expressed Word, with the Muslim belief in the Qur'an as God's perfectly expressed Word.

This review is of the book itself and does not take into consideration the Addendum, which I intend to access and study. Also, this is the first book by the author that I have read, and I recognize that he has probably addressed some of my concerns in other writings. I am not really familiar with his broader body of work.

Hope D. Werness is professor of art at California State University, Stanislaus. An art historian specializing in tribal, Precolumbian, and 19th and 20th European art, she is also a practicing artist, working in ceramics. Black Widow is another fast moving and terrific novel from J Robert Kennedy. It involves most of the favorite characters with Dylan Kane, the Delt� Force and the CIA operatives that are all involved in a present day scenario that will have other readers not wanting to put the book down until the end which has twists and turns that keep the reader guessing what is next! Kudos to the author for another page tuner

Fiction becomes Fact!

Awesome...unbelievable that this fiction plot turns out to be what we are seening on CNN and FOX...it is real. Thanks Robert for the" wake up call" to get inside the minds and charcter of the ISIS...our real enemy may be us if we do not start taking these dudes for real! New York could have been Paris, and still may be. Robert, you are doing us the honor of showing what may happen, unless we begin to stand firm against this enemy. Look what happened in Mali a few days ago, and more will come...stand tall America! Former Peace Corps Volunteer, Anita Datar gave her life in Mali, the only American to die in this recent attack, there will be more!

A Scary Storyline that Could Easily Become Reality

I have read, and enjoyed, all of Mr. Kennedy's books in the James Acton, Delta Force and Dylan Kane series. I would have really enjoyed The Black Widow if it didn't point out so clearly how easy an attack on U.S. soil can be accomplished. It also describes those who would generate the attack as more intelligent and organized than most Americans would believe.and with a motivation that we can't understand. Certainly there are some fictional liberties taken to make the story flow but this book lays out a scenario that could be more reality than fiction. Something I think every American should read.
