During the presidential election of 1936, Doremus Jessup, a newspaper editor, observes with dismay that many of the people he knows support the candidacy of a fascist, Berzelius Windrip. When Windrip wins the election, he forcibly gains control of Congress and the Supreme Court, and, with the aid of his personal paramilitary storm troopers, turns the United States into a totalitarian state. About the Author
Nobel Prize-winning writer Sinclair Lewis (1885-1951) is best known for novels like Main Street, Babbitt, Arrowsmith (for which he was awarded but declined the Pulitzer Prize), and Elmer Gantry. A writer from his youth, Lewis wrote for and edited the Yale Literary Magazine while a student, and started his literary career writing popular stories for magazines and selling plots to other writers like Jack London. Lewis s talent for description and creating unique characters won him the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1930, making him the first American writer to win the prestigious award. Considered to be one of the greats of American literature, Lewis was honoured with a Great Americans series postage stamp, and his work has been adapted for both stage and screen.

Christopher Hurt is an accomplished narrator with a lengthy resume of popular titles for Blackstone. A graduate of George Washington University s acting program, he currently resides in New York City.

It wouldn't be published today

Sinclair Lewis describes how America could find itself slipping into fascism. I say it couldn't be published today, because - even though it was written in 1935 - it sounds too much like the politics of 2016. The similarities to the rise of Trump are too numerous to list. It should be required reading for Americans voting in this election - or in any election in the future.

I highly recommend it. This is one book that will haunt ...

A frightening, haunting book which, although written in in the US, was created very much in the shadow of Hitler's ascendancy. What makes it so unsettling is its continued relevance in light of our latest debacle of a presidential election. I highly recommend it. This is one book that will haunt the reader for a long time to come.

"Pass it on to our children!"

The price of $7.99, happily paid for this Lewis' kindle, is so much cheaper than the heavy price of my first clandestine acquaintance with the same book during the years of my USSR youth in the fifties: it well could be from 5 to 7 years in labor camps, so I was really lucky then to escape this punishment, given for any anti-Soviet reading. Well, Mr. Lewis himself had nothing to do with such an interpretation of the book: he was writing about the threat of fascism, not of socialism. But Stalin's censors were quite shrewd in their understanding that practice of fascist hell in America would look just a bit too familiar for readers in a socialist paradise here. I have no boldness to comment the excellent book itself (it's about the same as to comment Dostoyevsky's "The Possessed", which was as clear warning about horrors of Communism for the Russian readers). Unfortunately, neither masterpiece was believed by their respective societies, so the best comments to them are made now not by readers, but by life. Now it's a life, which is very different from the thirties: though terms like "fascism", "capitalism" or "socialism" are still widely used, but for the majority of our politicians (both in the USA and elsewhere) they are hardly anything today but a purely technological means to hide their lust for immense power and immense wealth. That's – for modern politicians. As for modern voters – I can't agree with Mr. Gary Scharnhorst's afterword: "Lewis’s message— his protest of middle-class complacency and intellectual regimentation, what we today call “political correctness” on both the left and the right— remains as relevant and timely as ever". With all my love to optimism, I think that in our sad reality this book isn't timely any more. Which doesn't make it less great, of course. What's the use to read it most attentively in our 2014 then (except pure pleasure of a fine literature's taste, naturally)? Well, another American author, Mr. Ray Bradbury, saw this use in his "Fahrenheit 451", where a few fugitives from the book-burning world were learning pages of Bible, Shakespeare, Aristophanes, Thoreau and other treasures by heart. Because they were thinking: "We'll pass the books on to our children, by word of mouth, and let our children wait, in turn, on the other people. A lot will be lost that way. But you can't MAKE people listen. They have to come round in their own time, wondering what happened and why the world blew up under them. It can't last". Being an optimist I believe too with all my heart that it can't last and, thus, "It Can't Happen Here" does certainly deserve to be passed on to our good children "by word of mouth", - so, please, read it! No feelings

I didn't feel that there were actual emotions between the 2 women. Rachel lived in a small town, had a crap education, dead end job, and was drowning in debt. She only had 1 friend, no personal life, and she drank and smoke to make herself feel better. My point is, I think she would've given herself and control of her life over to anyone who made promises like Audrey did. For Audrey's part, when Rachel broke a rule on her first day, Audrey gave her 200 licks. It was by hand, not paddle or belt, but it was bare bottom, and overkill.

About the Author
Jerry H. Bentley is professor of history at the University of Hawai`i and editor of the Journal of World History. His research on the religious, moral, and political writings of Renaissance humanists led to the publication of Humanists and Holy Writ: New Testament Scholarship in the Renaissance (Princeton, 1983) and Politics and Culture in Renaissance Naples (Princeton, 1987). More recently, his research has concentrated on global history and particularly on processes of cross-cultural interaction. His book Old World Encounters: Cross-Cultural Contacts and Exchanges in Pre-Modern Times (New York, 1993) examines processes of cultural exchange and religious conversion before the modern era, and his pamphlet Shapes of World History in Twentieth-Century Scholarship (Washington, D.C., 1996) discusses the historiography of world history. His current interests include processes of cross-cultural interaction and cultural exchanges in modern times.

Herbert F. Ziegler is an associate professor of history at the University of Hawai'i. He has taught courses on world history for the last 19 years and is currently the director of the world history program at the University of Hawai'i. For several years, he also served as the book review editor of the 'Journal of World History'. His interest in twentieth-century European social and political history led to the publication of 'Nazi Germany's New Aristocracy (1990)'. He is at present working on a study that explores uncharted aspects of German society, especially the cultural manifestations of humor and satire in the Nazi era. About the Author
William Scott-Elliot (sometimes incorrectly spelled Scott-Elliott) (1849-1919) was a theosophist who elaborated Helena Blavatsky's concept of root races in several publications, most notably The Story of Atlantis (1896) and The Lost Lemuria (1904), later combined in 1925 into a single volume called The Story of Atlantis and the Lost Lemuria.

Very Interesting

The author writes this book w/a lot of facts based on verifiable data. It really gives you an in depth look at the history of life on this planet. A history you won't find in any public schools! I am not sure how much is really true, but it sure makes you think about how everything has evolved. . . I am really disappointed that the map links don't work on the Kindle. They are referred to a lot in the book and I could not see them.

historical data from a lost era?

I'm not sure if this book is fiction or non-fiction, but it reads as if the author knew what he was talking about. I find the book very interesting and found myself reading most of it in one sitting. I give the book 4 stars because the MAP links on the Kindle edition don't work. They speak a lot about maps and have links in the book but I can't see them when clicked on! Hope this is fixed soon.

Excellent Book

This is by far the best book I've read on Atlantis so far, and it was free on my Kindle! Of course after reading it I bought the hard copy because the Kindle copy doesn't have the pictures of the maps in it.

To understand how the information on this book came about, you'd have to know what Theosophy was all about. The writer quotes Madame Blavatsky, a woman who had access to the ancient books of our past, along with ancient maps showing the world thousands of years ago. From what little I know about Theosophy, it's a group of intellectual/spiritual people who want to preserve human knowledge, and hone their esoteric skills in order to see into other dimensions.

The information this groups comes away with, such as this book, shine with the light of truth, at least for me. I've read countless books on Atlantis, but this book gives details that I've only seen in past-life regression work. But what's truly amazing, is that as far as the time tables for Atlantis, what brought about her fall, none of the information I've read ever contradicts itself.

The Story of Atlantis and the Lost Lemuria tells the story of human spirits coming into physical bodies at the beginning of time. Apparently our bodies started out in a pretty hideous way. We literally had an eye in the back of our heads where hair didn't grow, we had some sort of spur on our heels that allowed us to walk backwards, and our bodies were soft and gelatinous. Did I mention a roll of flesh around our heads that we hung decorative things off of? This reminds of me of the headbands that primitive tribes wear even today.

This book tells how humanity has an evolutionary stage of an octave(seven notes) where we first go down into the physical world, yet retain our ability to see the spiritual world(our home), all the way to pure physicality(the farthest we are from God) and then back up the ladder until we allow all of our spiritual essence into our physical bodies. We are currently in the fifth stage of evolution which corresponds to the Hopi saying we are in the fifth world. I love the way it all fits together like this.

Though relatively short, this book, written in 1925, has more wisdom in it than the volumes of history we now enjoy, or not, as most high school students will tell you. Maybe if we taught history from books like these, kids would enjoy it more.

If you're interested in Atlantis, this book is one of the best, especially if you pair it with Rudolf Steiner's book on Atlantis.
