Grade 9 Up–A comprehensive, well-documented encyclopedia devoted to Jane Austen's world as seen through her literature. More than 150 alphabetical entries range in length from a paragraph to many pages, include references to Austen's works, and describe the topics' historical and cultural significance, often in great detail. Some of the longer articles are divided into subtopics; for example, Clothing offers information on both men's and women's clothing, Outer Garments, Accessories, Fabrics, and Buying and Making Clothes. In addition, there are separate entries on Sewing, Shoes, Gloves, Hats, and Pocketbooks and Reticules. While a number of the articles deal with politics and government, for the most part, they present a view of culture and society as reflected in Pride and Prejudice, Emma, Sense and Sensibility, Northanger Abbey, and other, minor works. The article on Places contains maps, lists, notes, and tables of locations mentioned in Austen's books. Street maps of London and Bath are included under those entries. Throughout the set, page references to specific titles are indicated in parentheses. Most of the black-and-white illustrations are reproductions of period cartoon drawings. An extensive time line and thematic bibliography complete this work. Noted for their wit and insight, Jane Austen's novels depict the social and domestic lives of the English country gentry during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The world inhabited by her characters was, in many respects, also Austen's world, and this shared milieu is the focus of Olsen's compilation, which is similar in concept and format to her All Things Shakespeare (Greenwood, 2002).

The 153 alphabetically arranged articles cover a broad range of subjects, among them carriages and other modes of transportation, clothing and accessories, entertainment, food and drink, household matters, intellectual concerns, and military life. Although some articles, for example Brickbatand Under-hung, are as brief as a few sentences, the majority are considerably longer, ranging up to 38 pages for Navy. Most entries include references to instances of the topic or term in Austen's writings or her life. Surprisingly, there is no article on women, so information on their status, property rights, etc., must be gleaned from other entries, such as Marriage and Widow.

The black-and-white illustrations include line drawings and maps but are primarily reproductions of contemporary prints, which, unfortunately, often lack clarity. Captions provide identification numbers through which these images can be retrieved in high resolution and in color on a Web site at Yale University's Lewis Walpole Library. Although this unique feature will be valuable to scholars and filmmakers, most users probably will not take that extra step. Both volumes contain an alphabetical list of entries, a topical guide to article titles, and a key to abbreviations. In addition, volume 2 includes an extensive time line that correlates milestones in the Austen family with significant contemporary events, an impressive bibliography organized by broad categories, and an index. The index does not always provide adequate access. For example, it contains no entry for boarding schools, which are discussed on pages 230-32, or for colds, treated on pages 441-42.

Drawn from contemporary and modern studies, this well-written and meticulously researched work provides a convenient means for general readers, students, and scholars to gain a better understanding of the social, cultural, and political climate of Austen's time. Offering broader coverage of the period than J. David Grey's The Jane Austen Companion(Macmillan, 1986), it complements Paul Poplawski's A Jane Austen Encyclopedia (Greenwood, 1998), which focuses on characters, writings, and family members. A beloved classic of American Zen

This is a collection of talks by one of the first Zen teachers in the U.S. If you're already practicing Zen, I highly recommend this book. If you're new to Zen, you might love this book or you might find it largely incomprehensible, or maybe both. Suzuki makes liberal use of the paradoxical language that is typical of Zen--e.g., "For us, complete perfection is not different from imperfection. The eternal exists because of non-eternal existence." If you'd prefer a more ordinary, explanatory style, I recommend Charlotte Joko Beck's "Everyday Zen." If you're looking for practical instruction in Zen meditation, you'll find it in "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind," but you might prefer either Philip Kapleau's "The Three Pillars of Zen," which includes more detailed instructions and illustrations of sitting postures, or Cheri Huber's instructional video "The Secret Is There Are No Secrets."

When I first read "Zen Mind, Beginner's Mind," for a college class on Buddhism, I wasn't quite sure what to make of it, but I did end up practicing Zen, and maybe this book had something to do with that. For many years, even while living at a Zen monastery, I suspected that a lot of the enthusiasm for this book was an "emperor's new clothes" phenomenon: a few respected people said it was wonderful, so then everybody said it was wonderful. I figured its aura of profundity was due in large part to Suzuki's congruence with our archetype of mountaintop gurus--the short sentences and limited English vocabulary, and the paradoxical language that sounds deep even though nobody actually knows what the heck it means. More recently, I've come to think that the emperor really does have clothes and that the big issues of human life are hard to talk about without paradox, and this is now one of my favorite Zen books.

A Wonderful Piece, All You'll Ever Need

This book took me out of the maze of faith-based religion and for the first time I found a teacher and a philosophy with so much credibility I had the confidence to trust in the more esoteric aspects of a teaching that weren't initially obvious. Suzuki, and I assume Zen in general, has the wisdom and courage to acknowedge that there are things about our universe that we cannot comprehend and treat them as both beautiful and mysterious. This contrasts with faith-based religions which instruct us to accept notions of "gods" and elaborate tales for explanation and as such are a complete assault on and violation of the intellect. Zen outlook which does away with the largely western notions of right & wrong, past and future, and states of lack will put one squarely in the present tense from moment to moment. It is utterly refreshing and healthy to look at the universe through glasses which are not colored by human desire and ego. Read this book, gain an understanding of yourself, an appreciation for the universe as a whole and piece of mind. Namaste

Misleading title for a possibly great book

I do not want to detract from this book's worth or wisdom in any way. No doubt the glowing reviews reflect the book's significance to the lives of those who have read and UNDERSTOOD it.

My only caveat is that for complete novices--like myself--the title is misleading, and therefore the book's teachings were not very accessible to me. The term "beginner's mind," as used in this work, refers to the idea of maintaining an open, childlike mind, and never acting or feeling as though one has ACHIEVED enlightenment. Be always searching, always growing.

"Beginner's mind" should NOT be taken as an indication that this is a book for those like myself who are newcomers to the study of Zen (i.e. "beginners"). Maybe you're an "old soul," but new to Zen, in which case, you may get more out of this book than I currently do.

As someone who instinctively feels that Zen has something BIG to offer me if only I can understand what the hell the books on Zen are talking about, this is NOT a good introduction. Zen terminology is thrown around as though I already know what the terms mean. The description of poses (without benefit of pictures) is confusing, and I must admit that I [shallowly?] found myself ticked off: if I couldn't figure out a stinking pose (or even get BEYOND the fact that I couldn't figure it out), how on earth was I "deep enough" to get my foot on the path to enlightenment?

For anyone who, like myself, needs something a little more concrete to get me started, something I can sink my literal Western teeth into, this ain't the book! I believe I personally need something a little less esoteric to start with, a book that bridges the gap between my VERY literal-minded Western upbringing and the much LESS literal mindset required of adherents of eastern religion/philosophy.

I also believe that if I am able to bridge that gap (using other resources), THEN I will be able to appreciate this book's teachings and will certainly come back to it.

ElBulli 1994-1997

This book and it's two sequels give an insight into the mind of a creative genius, Ferran Adria .They are VERY expensive and really mainly of use to the professional chef. Even then, I suspect that one would have to buy Adria's products to get a few recipes (these are very expensive in Australia). Adria describes some of his techniques but really gives no recipes. I think that even a professional chef will have difficulties in producing anything other than the few recipes they will have because one really needs to have
scientific training as well. In the 2004 book, he is using liquid nitrogen to produce spectacular effects but the use of this product requires such
specialised equipment and training that it is beyond the average chef's capabilities and finance .As an aesthetic exercise, all books are masterpieces.One can access some recipes on the internet but some of these suffer from translation errors (Spanish to English). Ph.D Qual.Chef.

Not in Spanish

This review is not about the book but about the seller. I don't know why I assumed this book was in spanish (that's how I wanted it) and bought it without hesitation because Ferran Adria is my husband's idol. I got it for my husband's birthday and when he opened it we realised that it was in english (El Bulli is in Spain). I contacted the seller asking to change this book for spanish one, he didn't have one, so when I said I wanted to return it he informed me that it didn't have the same price as before because we removed the film when we opened it. My final email was asking how much the difference would be, I never got an answer. Anyway, I have a book in english that my husband will have to translate every step of the way, and that was his birhtday present :(

"Schopenhauer's Best Work"

I recently had the opportunity to find this gem in the SUNY New Paltz Library. Having read all of Arthur Schopenhauers other works, I have searched endlessly for the last five years to acquire it . Not being a student of the school I was unable to borrow it, thus I had to sit and read all 1200 pages of Vol.1 and 2 in the Library. The pleasure was unspeakable. The book was written in his later years and brings out the real Schopenhauer , The pessimist and realist that we all love. I will put in a request for Amazon to find it for it is a true masterpiece , one that any student of Philosophy must have on his or her bookshelf. One can not say that he knows Schopenhauer unless he has read this book !

Schopenhauer's Claim to Fame

Actually, Parerga was not the book which S. considered to be his masterpiece; The World as Will and Representation was. But it made him famous, especially in England. It's striking too how weak human nature is, even in the case of a man considered to be both a genius and wise. Already rich by inheritance, both supremely intelligent and extremely clever, highly educated, and ultra-cynical about people, the temperamental philosopher craved FAME all his life. (He got it, just before he died.)
Not everything S. writes about in this book (or for that matter any of his other books) is relevant or interesting or correct - you may want to skip his physical theory of colors, for example. But the reader does get a sense of the range and brilliance of his multilingual mind. Many of his thoughts are timeless and true everywhere in the world.
S. caught my attention not because I'm interested in philosophy generally - I most certainly am not - but rather because he was one of Einstein's heroes, and Einstein is one of mine. Einstein loved to quote him, and apparently had his picture hanging in his office.
Interestingly, Hitler also counted S. as his hero. The only book he took to the front as a soldier in the First World War was Schopenhauer's masterpiece, and later as Fuehrer he quoted S. in long, rambling paragraphs in his own table talk. One wouldn't normally expect much in common between the greatest mind who ever lived and this anti-intellectual warmonger. Hitler was an antisemite, so perhaps that's one reason why he was attracted to S. But S. was most liberal and generous in his misanthropic hatreds - one doesn't find him discriminate for or against any particular group. Perhaps Hitler didn't know about the far more damning things S. had to say about Germans?
S. influenced many philosophers, such as Nietzsche and Wittgenstein, but I'm not familiar enough with philosophy to elaborate on this point. He also inspired many other creative minds who were not actually philosophers: Richard Wagner (a fanatical devotee to S. and to whom Hitler was also a fanatical devotee), Leo Tolstoy, Thomas Mann, Sir Winston Churchill (mentioned S. in his autobiography My Early Life), and the quantum physicist Erwin Schroedinger, among numerous others. (Notice that the last three were Nobel prizewinners?) Even the sharp-tongued and critical Wolfgang Pauli (another Nobel physicist) took him seriously. If you want to know why S. was so influential, then this is a good place to start. Parerga is easier to read than his other books, with the exception of his two essays on morality. Try to get Vol. I as well, but if you must choose, get Vol. II - it's longer and has a good index, and a good index is always useful in any book.
Start with Parerga; then after you're familiar with his philosophy, move on to his main work. But don't forget his Essay on the Freedom on the Will - which stands alone as a real masterpiece in all philosophy, even more outstanding than his other works.

It's a 5-star book; but good luck affording it.

This will not be a review of the Parerga. I'm here to review a price.

This (and its sister volume) lists for a whopping $65.00, meaning the two together cost $130 - a price much more appropriate for a college textbook than for something like this. Even Amazon's huge price slash doesn't make it much better. It's still $70-$80 for the two volumes.

Here's what I don't get - this is a classic. It's a 1974 translation (by a man who by now must be either very dead or very old) of a work of philosophy from 1851 (by a man who is quite dead). Why in God's name would this cost so much? How can it possibly be justified?

It seems to me like some quirk. This is the kind of book one expects to be able to buy in a Dover edition for 8 bucks. And there's a reason for that - this is the kind of work that one SHOULD be able to buy in a Dover edition for 8 bucks. This is something everyone should have the right to read, and read at an affordable price. This is not some new book, nor some super obscure book, nor some textbook. It's a standard version of a philosophical classic. A translation that's already 2 generations old. But whatev. I just don't think Schopenhauer would be very happy that the only version of his own favorite among his works currently in print is being priced like this and effectively kept from readers.

About the Author
Glen Berger cut his teeth at Seattle’s Annex Theatre back in the ’90s. His plays since then include Underneath the Lintel, which has been staged more than two hundred times worldwide, been translated into eight languages, and won several Best Play awards; and O Lovely Glowworm, a 2005 Portland Drammy Award Winner for Best Script. He is a New Dramatists alumnus. In television, Glen has won two Emmys (out of twelve nominations), and has written more than 150 episodes for children’s television series including Arthur (PBS), Peep (Discovery/The Learning Channel), Big and Small (BBC), and Fetch (PBS), for which he was the head writer for all five years of its run. Glen spent six years cowriting the script of Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark.

Song of Spider Man 1 It’s Just a Play
The four drinks I knocked back on an empty stomach in the empty VIP room were finally kicking in. The conversations around me in the crowded lobby had become amplified and muffled, like I was floating in a diving bell surrounded by a lot of classy-looking fish. Fine. Just so long as I didn’t have to talk to any of them. Any moment now, the lights were going to blink, and then we’d have to take our seats, and I’d be saved. Except, no, I’d still be screwed. Because there wasn’t a drug in the world that would make sitting through the show tonight anything but unremitting torture.

We were already thirty minutes behind schedule. They were holding the curtain because everyone was having such a fine time gabbing with each other. So I had to come up with a plan because hiding would be pathetic, but people were going to try to talk to me, or worse—congratulate me. It was opening night. And I was the cowriter. Giant letters spelled out my name on that building-sized sign out front. So congratulating me would seem like the thing to do. But this show was a special case, and I was a special case in this special case, and so collecting “congratulations” was like collecting a pile of wet socks.

Of course, I imagined it was a hundred times worse for her. And, oh man, how the two of us yattered so eagerly about this night once upon a time. To think there was a time when—no, I couldn’t think about any of that—I just had to walk purposefully and no one would stop me to talk. So I sidled past Bill Clinton and Lou Reed, Salman Rushdie, John McEnroe—it was like being trapped in an updated version of the Sgt. Pepper album cover. I figured I’d be fine so long as I didn’t run into her, because I wouldn’t know what to say. But I ran into someone else, and he immediately walked away which, like a sliding set piece, revealed�.�.�. her. And I didn’t know what to say.

Julie Taymor. She was standing near the doors that led out to Forty-third Street. She wasn’t going to come at all tonight, which was boggling. Yet understandable. And, in being understandable, even more boggling. It had been three months since I’d last seen her, and the rush of old, cozy feelings smacked against The New Reality, and the impact made me just sick.

Even now, I carry the dream with me every day—to make up with her. So it all can be as sunny as it once was. Publishing a book detailing our six years together might not be the most effective way to achieve that. In fact, I was warned not to write about any of this. But I can’t help it—it’s a story, and that’s what we do with stories. We tell them. In fact, this whole book is a story about storytelling—the story of an epic attempt by earnest human beings to tell a story and to tell that story brilliantly. Only, there’s this:

One should probably begin the story of the making and remaking of a Broadway musical about Spider-Man with that hallowed day in 1962 when Stan Lee, along with illustrator Steve Ditko, came up with The Big Idea: Bullied high schooler acquires spider powers.

It’s a trim little setup. And just different enough to be revolutionary. Not only was this teenaged Peter Parker suddenly burdened with “great responsibilities,” he still had to run the every-day gauntlet every teenager has to run—the social troubles, the money troubles, the dermatological troubles�.�.�.

A comic-book panel would depict a publisher sitting behind a cluttered desk in the cramped Madison Avenue offices of Marvel Comics staring at a sketch of a figure wearing a bodysuit covered in webbing. Lee and Ditko would be standing on the other side of the desk, looking on expectantly. The publisher would be looking�.�.�. doubtful.

“Several months later�.�.�.” would read the caption in our next panel. Lee and Ditko’s new superhero is swinging with a hoodlum under his arm on the cover of Marvel’s Amazing Fantasy #15. It’s our webslinger’s debut, and it’s in the final issue of an anthology series already slotted to be canceled. That’s how dubious the publisher was of this new “spider-man” idea.

The next comic-book panel would flash us forward forty years. It would be a split screen depicting the gleaming offices of media giant Marvel Entertainment on one side and the makeshift office of two almost-entirely-untested Broadway producers on the other. The producers are being informed via phone that they’ve just been granted the rights to make a musical out of Marvel’s most treasured property: Spider-Man. Exclamation points shine above the producers’ heads.

But if this is a story about storytelling cast through the prism of Spider-Man the Musical, then maybe we should be starting fifty-thousand years ago, back in a time when the world was teeming with Paleolithic ceremonies featuring singing, dancing, and human characters endowed with animal powers. In a large, single-paneled splash page, we would see two prehistoric figures arguing over just how their musical performance is supposed to go. On their hairy faces—anger, exasperation. Why? Because collaboration, by definition, requires humans to interact with each other. Which means every moment in a collaboration quivers with the potential for transcendental connection. And also fury, and hair-tearing frustration, and silences as icy as distant planets. Just look at Lee and Ditko. You think they had a falling-out? Of course they had a falling-out.

Another scene to ink and color: a twenty-first-century living room, somewhere in the United States, or Sweden, or South America. Children have commandeered couch cushions and bathrobes. One of them is pretending to be Spider-Man. By the looks of it, their pretending includes a large cast of characters and an elaborate plot.

Storytelling. It’s what homo sapiens do. We do it as automatically as a pancreas produces insulin. We’re compelled to codify otherwise-random events into cause and effect. Into patterns. Into narrative. It’s a drive that in part makes humans so human. And it’s a hunger that drove the creators of this confounded musical (as well as its audiences) into spasms of excitement, disappointment, and a few dozen other emotions as the show careened down the long road to its much-delayed opening night.

And it’s why my last comic-book panel would depict a scene from opening night. I would draw it in an emo-manga style, with a smudged, cocktail-sipping crowd in the background. In the foreground, a woman with flowing hair framing sad-smiling eyes is regarding the addled-looking man in front of her. The man’s heart is on his sleeve, his tongue is in a knot, and in the banner at the top of the panel, that poor schmuck’s thoughts from over a year later are revealed:

I loved her. I still do.

With heart-scarred bewilderment,

I love her.�.�.�.

And the thing of it is�.�.�. she despises me.

Julie Taymor despises me with photograph-shredding rage. Or so I hear. Though maybe by now she’s past caring. After all, it’s been thirty months since that last phone call; that last lit match on a kerosene-doused relationship, six years of collaboration KAFWOOOSH!�.�.�.

Sure, yes, maybe she’s moved on. But I doubt it. While I was writing this book, teams of lawyers were busy submitting suits and countersuits. Among other demands, Julie wanted half of my money. And I wasn’t about to give it to her.

Or—wait—let me say one more thing first.

I am aware—I really am—that the following pages contain metaphors more appropriate for an account of an amputation tent in the Crimean War; adjectives best saved for the Apollo space program or the Bataan Death March. Next to events of actual weight, I know this whole thing sounds self-important as hell.

That said, for those who lived through this odyssey, very high stakes were involved, and very real costs were exacted, and I wouldn’t want to minimize that fact. And so it is with simultaneous irony, bitterness, and innocent awe that I state this (because I know it, but I’m going to forget it):

This book? It’s about a play.

Just a play.

Just a fucking play.

After reading all those articles about Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark in the newspapers I couldn’t wait to find out what really happened with that ill-fated Broadway musical. Reading Berger's book did not disappoint. On the contrary, it surpassed my expectations. It is highly informative and insightful, especially in regard to all the intricacies, intrigues and complexities that accompanied this high caliber production from its inception to the long awaited opening night. I was fascinated by the many unexpected turns of events, which made me wonder if, in fact, there is such a thing as providence – some divine or nefarious intervention that goes beyond mere luck or chance. Apart from a great story, told with skill and humor, I found Song of Spider-Man full of life lessons which gave me pause to ponder. It’s an important discourse on Trust and Communication, which holds true in any situation where human beings have to work together, whether it’s in the theater, in business, politics or in the grand institution of life. I couldn’t put the book down.

Five star book about a one star musical

Glen Berger is the co-author of the "book" -- the words other than the song lyrics -- for the Broadway musical, Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark. He stuck with the play through more than six years of drafts, rewrites, the firing of superstar director Julie Taymor, the complete revamping of the show, and -- finally -- the relative success of the new version.

I saw the original version of Spider-Man and it was, by far, the worst experience I have ever had in a theater. The plot was incoherent, the music (by Bono and The Edge of U2) was mediocre -- and the lyrics were often unintelligible because of the muddy sound system -- the attempts at humor fell flat, and the attempts at transmitting a message fell even flatter. Berger was clearly responsible for some of these problems … and yet, he has written a terrific book about his experiences.

I'm not sure what I was expecting -- probably a hatchet job laying all of the blame on Taymor -- but what I got was a funny, insightful, candid, honest, even-handed attempt to make sense of his long experience with this play. Sure Taymor comes off as a bit of an inflexible egomaniac -- and her tendency to blow up at the expense of assistant set directors and the like, is very unappealing -- but Berger bends over backward to play it straight, and, at least as far as I can see, he succeeds.

Clearly, Berger should be kept far away from writing Broadway musicals, by the use of machine gun nests backed up by drones, if necessary. But he should be encouraged to write more first-person nonfiction. I don't know what else he has done in his life that he can write about, but on the basis of this book, I would be happy to read his account of walking his dog and brushing his teeth. If you have an interest in Broadway musicals, the theater in general, or just this particular, much discussed, show, you will love this book. I would give it 10 stars if I could.

Final point: The book is remarkably free of glitches. There are a couple of minuscule things: He changes someone's age within a couple of paragraphs and he apparently doesn't know the difference between an editorial (written by the editors of a newspaper) and an op-ed (written by an invited contributor). But the book is mercifully free of the typos, omitted words, repetitions of whole paragraphs within a few pages, and other problems that plague modern publishing. Maybe he had a good editor, but given the sorry state of modern publishing, I would guess he actually took the time to proofread the book. Who would think we would have gotten to the point that doing so would merit praise?

Final, final point: His last name is Berger; his wife's last name is Almquist. Their kids have the last name of Bergquist. How neat is that?

An insightful, pleasure to read page-turner

Everyone's heard the story in the press. Here's the story from an insider who saw it all go down.

Reasons I enjoyed it:

First off, Mr. Berger writes an entertaining story. We already know what's going to happen because we all saw it play out in the press, so he concentrates on the little details that keep you hooked, like a little quip from Bono, or an insightful moment from Taymor, or his own willful disregard of his better instincts. Each one catapults you to the next.

Second, he doesn't come off as the hero. Far from it. I think when he "mealymouth"'s his support for Plan X (the third or fourth plan to fix the musical from Taymor's initial staging) he comes off as the polar opposite of the Tony-winning Taymor who can make snap decisions that are 95% of the time brilliant. He comes off as one of those people who bitch behind the scenes but don't have the courage of their convictions.

Third, he's funny. There's some laugh out loud moments in this book. It's not the content that makes you laugh (unless you find disaster funny) it's his style and references. I was thinking how his situation was so like "Bullets Over Broadway" just seconds before he pointed out how his situation was just like Bullets Over Broadway. There were dozens of these moments in the book.

Fourth, if you've ever done theatre, at any level, you'll appreciate what's going on here. Dictatorial direction, sudden deaths, pushing changes right up to curtain time, egos that run rampant, temperamental actors, yearning for transcendence but not able to transcend, it's all here, writ large, as large as it gets. He couldn't have had a bigger canvas, and he covers it all.

Fifth, although this may have been his own way of creating sympathy for himself (who knows?) I found his self doubt and introspection a nice counterpoint to the narrative, which moves right along with no breathers. Perhaps this was all in his head, or in retrospect. Doesn't matter, it worked.

Finally, the book-long tension on the subject of loyalty was the real prize here. No spoilers, but it plays all the way through the epilogue, so be sure you read it all. If you've ever had the opportunity to work with people who are truly brilliant (like Taymor, Bono, Edge) imagine what would happen when the boat splits in half and you have to figure out where your loyalties lie. It's enough to make you depressed, ill, or worse. To the author's credit, it hurts but it never makes you want to put the book down.

Awesome read. Fun subject, great characters, a happy ending (sort of). If you're the kind of person who enjoys watching train wrecks or disaster videos, this is for you. But it also has redemption in it, in a way that isn't simple or compartmentalized or predictable, so there's more depth here than you might expect.
