Beautifully magnificent and poignant story of conjoined twins

Rose and Ruby Darlen were born in Leaford, Baldoon County during the worst tornado in history. Little four year old Larry Merkel and his blue bike were sucked up into the funnel, Larry never to be seen again and the bike found on a rooftop in town. Hundreds of migrant workers poured into the tiny hospital in various stages of injury, causing the single doctor, Dr. Ruttle Jr., to call in retired Dr. Ruttle Sr. to assist.

Their mother, a young woman, staggered into the hospital in labor, smoking cigarettes and moaning in pain. Signing the admission papers as Elizabeth Taylor from Hollywood CA, the young woman delivers conjoined twins who are immediately whisked away to a Children's Hospital in Toronto, along with head nurse Lovey Darlen. At the sight of the twins, Dr. Ruttle Sr. keels over from a heart attack and dies. Less than a week later, the young woman silently flees the hospital leaving behind her twins and no trace of who she was. Lovey is already in love with the babies, and adopts them. Rose and Ruby grow up with Aunt Lovey and Uncle Stash (born Stanislaus Darlensky from Slovakia), their childhood spent at an old farm in the country near the Merkels who worked the farm for the Darlens.

As Rose and Ruby turn twenty-nine, and they are about to become the oldest living craniopagus twins, Rose decides to write her autobiography. She has to convince Ruby to co-operate. Rose has always been a writer and a lover of books, Ruby prefers television and is interested in the Neutral Indian artifacts they've found over the years in the farm's fields. With Rose working on her laptop and Ruby writing longhand on yellow tablets, the two girls tell their tale. You see, they've just discovered that Rose has an inoperable aneurysm, and they both have, at most, six or seven months to live.

This is one of the most emotionally moving and engaging books I've ever read. Lori Lansens truly captures the spirit of each girl, keeping them highly individual while accounting their inseparable lives. She mentions some books she studied in her Acknowledgements, and its evident she put the information to good use. You'll believe you are listening to the voice of a true conjoined twin. Rose does most of the writing, and to further emphasize the separate minds of the girls, the publishers chose to use different fonts for each girl's work on the novel.

It's a beautiful story; charming, witty, sad, funny, scary ... but most of all the story of a great love, one between both sisters and one between them and their parents. You'll fall in love with Rose and Ruby, and adore the characters of Aunt Lovey and Uncle Stash. Many things have happened to the girls during their short lives, including a trip to Slovakia to meet Uncle Stash's family that is both funny and scary but anything but tender. Lansens work is nothing shy of expert. Her characterizations, her dialogue, her prose, her descriptions - all aspects of her writing show off her great talent.

I bought the book out of curiosity for conjoined twins - I've always had a thing for teratology. What I found was a real treasure. If this book doesn't move you then you have no heart at all. I can't recommend this book highly enough. Ten Stars! Enjoy!

Compelling subject, beautiful story, fantastic writing

"The Girls" is the story of conjoined twins, told in the spirit of an autobiography. Rose and Ruby each tell their shared story from their own point of view, and Lansens does an amazing job of giving each girl her own distinct voice. I was worried that conjoined twins would be a difficult subject for an author to tackle, but Lansens has done an excellent job of telling the story of two ordnary girls living their lives under extraordinary circumstances. Every minute of their lives in their small, quiet, country town is interesting, because of their special situation and their unique relationship. From the story of their birth in the midst of a tornado to their struggles on their journey to adulthood, Lansens' examination of the fascinating, intertwined lives of "The Girls" captured me from the first page and didn't let me go until the last syllable. Highly recommended.

I'm so sad I finished the book!

As an avid reader, I am always looking for a new author or a recommendation. I purchased this book after reading the positive reviews it received on this website and was prepared to read an interesting well-loved novel. Instead, I was drawn into the world of Rose and Ruby as they began their life through adulthood. The first person narrative of the story actually is told by each twin at different times. In a way, I felt as if I was a fly on the wall experiencing everything they did.

I found this novel to be captivating, mesmerizing, funny, sad and poignant often all in the same chapter. My only regret is that I have finished the book too quickly. Defiantly recommended for anyone who wants to view life through an interesting couple of sisters...

Fun but not easy

I am not sure I would take this specific book to a desert island but I would highly recommend it to anyone who is in possession of patience, self-motivation and willingness to spend time working through both the problems and any gaps that may occur within the proofs. This book can be used both by Graduate students or as a topics/independent study course for well prepared and motivated undergraduates.
In general, you can be guaranteed that the exposition present within any book by Rotman is par-excellence and this book is no exception. The material is presented in a sound and definite logical manner, which results in gently directing the reader through an 'introduction' to group theory by presenting the material in well thought out and bite sized portions. The only negative aspect of this book, which is minimal as best, is the authors choice of notation, for example the notation used to define G-sets in chapter 3 does not necessarily do the topic justice since G-sets in their own right are an important concept. But, as stated, this is the only complaint and is easily remedied. Enjoy!

Solid, but occasionally frustrating

I used this book as a means of writing my senior thesis on the clasification of the projective unimodular groups and the Mathieu groups as being simple. Most of the proofs were well constructed and easy to follow. What this books lacks is a proof reading. Several of the proofs make no sense in the form in which they are written. Also, his notation at times becomes cluttered and not easy to follow. One can imagine how difficult notation can be in general, but when it is full of typographical errors, it can be almost impossible to wade through without the help of someone who knows the material. This book is certainly not a waste of time to read and is very good as a reference for theorems concerning finite groups, however do not put all your eggs in one basket and base your education on this one book.

Good book but many errors

This is a good book, well-organized and contains many useful materials. However I do not recommend it as an independent study textbook (which is what I did). There are many errors, most of them are typographical but some of them are wrong numbers which are very difficult to correct, especially in the exercises given. And the exercises are very important -- the following discussions and proofs depend on some of them. Springer published a "corrected second printing" in 1999 but obviously they didn't do a good job (I purchased the new one and I got the old one in the library).

John J. Macionis was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He earned a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and a doctorate in sociology from the University of Pennsylvania.

John Macionis is Professor and Distinguished Scholar of Sociology at Kenyon College in Gambier, Ohio, where he has taught for almost thirty years. From an instructor's perspective

I have to use this book to teach Sociology 101, and it frustrates me to no end. The book is a failure in every aspect.

Introductory textbooks have to simplify things, of course, but Macionis oversimplifies to the point where my students feel that their intelligence has been insulted, and worst of all, don't realize that the sociological concepts he's talking about are more than simple stereotypes and platitudes. He writes at one point, essentially, that "white people don't understand poverty", while every college freshmen knows that poor whites do exist, and that the author must be either a racist or an idiot for thinking otherwise. But what does the cultural construct of race have to do with social hierarchy and economics? Macionis doesn't start that conversation, you'll have to do it yourself.

And that's the general flaw of the book, Macionis writes chapter after chapter of superficial lists of concepts, theorists, and vocabulary, but never does the real work of laying out key sociological theories in a simple and thorough way, which of course is exactly what a textbook is for. As a teacher, I'm then forced to spend class time laying out the basics that Macionis didn't cover, everything from culture to symbolic interactionism. He'll give a few paragraphs to Weber, Marx, or Freud, but doesn't actually explain them in any coherent way.

Some things are completely absent. Macionis doesn't mention some key concepts, like social capital, and doesn't explain at all how sociologists use statistics. With glaring omissions like those, it's obvious that Macionis simply doesn't understand sociology.

Finally, the book just isn't organized in any worthwhile way. Macionis puts the three big "approaches" (StrucFunc, Conflict, Interaction) in the first chapter, before the students have been exposed to enough material to understand why they're useful or important. Then the rest of the book is a laundry list of concepts, clumped into chapters without any real theme. For example, chapter 4 is about social interaction, status, role, emotion, and humor, but gender, class, race, social groups, and social stratification are spread out in other chapters. Sure, the students learn their vocabulary, but it becomes very difficult to connect the different concepts to each other.

Macionis offers snippets of narrative to help explain the concepts, but nothing big enough for actual analysis, so you'll have to do it instead. All in all, this book does nothing that it's supposed to do, and should not be bought by anyone.

Amazon advertises this as a "Kindle" edition yet it doesn't work on Kindles. It only works on Kindle Fires, PC Kindle application (not the Windows 8 app edition) and iPad (not even the iPhone Kindle app). How is this not supported on Windows 8 Kindle App???? All the new laptops/tablets for windows are out of luck. This should be disclaimed a VERY LIMITED e-editions only. Not happy.

Good book, bad price

The book is full of great information for someone studying sociology. However, my prof told me that new editions are pretty much the same as the last. Typically they just change the chapter order. If I had known this I would have saved myself about $50 buying the older 10th edition and would have the same information. There aren't going to be any huge changes in society every 9 months- buy the previous edition!

Major Milestone for Neural Science

I am a software designer, involved in mobile technology and sensors. Why would a designer be intrigued by a book about brain imaging techniques? The answer is that this book is much more than a description of state of the art of imaging brain function, it is a must read for anyone interested in cognition.

Noam Chomsky famously stated in 80`s that contemporary neural science was too primitive to provide any useful information for understanding of language processing. Today, leading computer vision scientists and AI scientists similarly see no need to study brain, Cartesian separation of body and mind leads them to believe that vision function as well as higher cognitive functions can be better implemented in silicon, unencumbered by carbon structures and motor actions of specifically human anatomy.

As it turns out, Freeman's evidence recorded with rudimentary 8x8 array of electrodes proves them wrong. It also proves futility of future efforts relying on symbolic, rule based digital information processing to create human like intentional behavior.

Chapters 1-5 of the book cover basic techniques of electroencephalography, such us short term FFT's, Gabor transform, Hilbert transform, Principal Component Analysis, progressing to wavelets and wavelet denoising in chapter 5.

Chapters 6-7 describe overwhelming obstacles to measuring various forms of energy produced by brain and introducing many ingenious methods to overcome them. These chapters also introduce difference between micro scale events generated by small neural circuits and macro scale events produced by large scale interaction of massive neuronal populations.

Chapters 8-11 are the heart of the book, opening with well known spatial images of AM waves recorded over the entire olfactory bulb of sniffing rabbit as well as demonstrating how these spatial patterns change in different contexts. The bulb sends its output through non-topographic lateral olfactory track to enthorhinal cortex where it gets transformed into a multi-sensory percept or gestalt and possibly a new memory in hippocampus. At this point AM patterns do not represent the stimulus, they represent user memory, retrieved by stimulus. Higher cognitive functions can only be explained by macroscopic patterns of continuous AM waves rather than discrete symbol processing.

Authors describe brain as a thermodynamic system, not an information processing system. They demonstrate that understanding cognition requires measurements at both macro and micro level of brain dynamics. While the two levels constrain each other, they can not form a linear casual chain. It is this lack of linear causality in cognition which makes information processing approach indefensible.

At the age of 85 professor Freeman delivers empirical evidence which completes triumphantly a long struggle against 350 year old but still dominant cartesian dualism of contemporary science, quest started by likes of Edelman, Winograd, Damasio, Lakoff, Merleau Ponty and many others. Thanks to work of professor Freeman that quest may be reaching its end.

About the Author
Don Norman is co-founder of the Nielsen Norman Group, an executive consulting firm that helps companies produce human-centered products and services. He is Breed Professor of Design Emeritus at Northwestern University and Professor Emeritus at the University of California, San Diego, where he was founding chair of the Department of Cognitive Science and chair of the Department of Psychology. He has served as Vice President of Apple Computer's Advanced Technology Group, and his many books include "Emotional Design," "The Design of Future Things," and most recently, "Living with Complexity."

Great book - no matter what your profession

Finally I got a chance to read this amazing book. Don Norman treats design very methodically and shows that good design is not a black box but something even more analytical people can understand and apply.
There are many important lessons but I found the concepts of discoverability, affordance, signifiers, feedbacks, mappings and constraints a simple, yet a powerful model to understand design.
I am not a designer by a far stretch but I can now appreciate good vs bad design with a deeper understanding of the designer's intent in building something. Even of design is not your field, you will greatly benefit from the book and you will realize that design is not just a touchy feely topic.

Although, I would have to say that for a design book, the images are not printed very well (in the paper back edition). And the during introducing the core concepts, in the first chapter, the author forgot to include 'constraints'. Also the order of these terms keep changing though out the book. This does not align well with the mapping concept the author so strongly professes.

However, now that this edition is out, don't get the previous version, since this one has far more relevant examples including hand held devices. As an additional resource, there is also a design course on udacity offered by Don Norman.

Half as long would have been twice as good.

The good:

All three stars I'm giving this are for the content. Norman's insights and principles are worthwhile and very useful. I don't agree with all of them, but most of them seem sound and the ones that don't still bring up good points to discuss.

The bad:

I wish an editor could convince him to cut this book in half. It's obvious that Norman is a academic and has been for a long time. He has that thing, that ivory tower myopia that comes off as pompous and self congratulatory. I had a really hard time wading through his never ending stories in the service of simple points. GET TO THE POINT, MAN. He also uses psychological terms that are terrible to try and parse (associative activation error? Are you kidding me? How about we call that the "ring ring, come in" error, so maybe people can remember it.) It's surprising that a book about design is so poorly designed on so many levels. Part of that is because this edition is an Amazon print on demand, and the layout sucks. Good lessons in here about how NOT to layout text. Part of it is also up to Norman, though. He likes using italics, I think as asides or illustrations of a point, but it's not consistent, and really just why, man? Why do that? Accept the cultural constraints of typography.

tl;dr

My advice is to read the last chapter, which is a nice succinct roundup of all the main points. If you want more information on any topic, look back through the book.

a bit tedious but plenty of useful information if you wade through it

Some good information here, but the author suffers from an overabundance of 'completeness' in explanation. The author is clearly an authority on the topic of human interaction and design, and can go on endlessly about common mistakes made by designers. But you may find yourself skimming through much of the information as you find many pages are taken to make fairly simple or obvious points.
