About the Author

Meeta Rani Jha is a feminist sociologist and an anti-racist activist. She is a scholar-in-residence at Beatrice Bain Research Group (BBRG) in the Gender and Women’s Studies Department at the University of California, Berkeley, US. She has taught sociology, globalization, transnational feminist cultural studies, critical race, ethnicity, and media studies at a number of universities in the San Francisco Bay area (currently at the University of San Francisco, US) and in London. For a long time she was a community organizer on issues of racial discrimination, low pay, migration, domestic violence, and homeworking in the UK.

About the Author
Yeon-Cheon Oh was president of Seoul National University (2010–14) and chair of the Board of Trustees. Before then, he taught at the university’s Graduate School of Public Administration from 1983 to 2010, and also served as the dean of that school from 2000 to 2004.

Gi-Wook Shin is a professor of sociology and director of the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center at Stanford University.

Raymond Briggs's loving tribute to his parents has an emotional power that far exceeds its deceptively simple technique. Graphic in format, the book combines vigorous but sensitive illustrations with dialogue that cogently elucidates its characters' personalities. Milkman Ernest meets lady's maid Ethel in 1928. In short order they are married, holders of a mortgage, and parents of a boy--solid members of the English working class, aspiring to more for their son. As they experience the Depression, World War II, postwar prosperity and cultural upheaval, readers come to know them intimately. Ernest is left-wing, unashamedly proletarian, and perennially enthusiastic about the great changes modernity is bringing, from unemployment insurance to highways. Ethel is a Tory, a bit of a snob, and far more realistic about how much actual improvement they can expect and what it will cost. They worry about their adored child constantly, especially after he goes to art school. She gets sick and grows senile in 1970; he dies shortly after her in 1971. It's hard to imagine a reader who won't weep when their son looks at the pear tree in the yard of the house the couple inhabited for 41 years and says, "I grew it from a pip." Plain words and plain people strike a universal chord in this touching memoir. --Wendy Smith

This wonderful book by noted children's author/illustrator Briggs (The Snowman) is something quite new: the story of his parents' quiet lives, played out against the stirring events of the century, done as a comic strip. Ethel was a rather timid ladies' maid, Ernest a dashing milkman, when they first saw each other in 1928. He swept her off in a whirlwind courtship, and they bought the little London row house where they were to live the rest of their days. In pictures exquisitely attuned to the niceties of English domestic architecture and period clothes, Briggs takes Ethel and Ernest fondly through the decades. He is born, a source of great joy, but it's a difficult birth and Ethel is told she can't have any more children. World War II approaches, and little Raymond is sent off to the country as an evacuee. After the war, Ernest, an ardent Socialist, believes that utopia has arrived, while the more cautious and conservative Ethel keeps bringing him back to earth. Then come the wonders of their first car, the advent of television, Raymond's eventual marriage in the swinging '60s and the aging couple's gradual decline into senility, floowed by their deaths within weeks of each other. The dialogue is heartbreakingly accurate, the pictures cinematic in their conveyance of delight and drama; the whole book is not only a deeply moving testament to "ordinary" folk but a precious piece of social historyAthe essence of a lower-middle-class English life over seven decades. This was deservedly a bestseller in England and warrants no less here. (Oct.)

YA-An engrossing and revelatory picture story. After a brief courtship, Ethel, a ladies' maid, and Ernest, a milkman, married and bought a house. Much bemused at the size and amenities of this dwelling, they settled in to make a home. After some years, their only child, Raymond, was born and the small family moved through the world of working-class England before, during, and after World War II. Ernest's strong socialist bent contrasted with Ethel's admiration of the vanishing aristocracy. The Depression years, Raymond's evacuation during the war, the Blitz and the extended rationing, and the new socialistic government policies and the relative security of the '50s are realistically portrayed in both colored pictures and text. While presenting this story in a comic-strip format, Briggs doesn't flinch at revealing personal details; at the end, readers see his mother's disease-ravaged corpse and his father's inability to carry on. This is a vivid chronicle of a time and place not very far past and the life story of an average, but loved and loving couple. As a memoir, as a graphic novel, as an invitation to participate in someone else's memories, it is most successful. A quick but haunting read that's sure to involve anyone who picks it up.

An unforgettable graphic biography

So many classics are now out of print but this one can still be found occasionally. Like Roz Chast's "Can We Talk About Something More Pleasant?," this sweet little bio looks back at the lives of the author's parents, in a beautiful, detailed graphic book format. Their early married life, their experiences in England during WWII, their settling into family life after the war, and their long time together. It will leave you smiling — and weeping, a little. Who is Ray Briggs? The wonderful author/illustrator of the "Father Christmas" books and "The Snowman." None better.

Learn about British history--through the eyes of everyday people!

I learned about this graphic memoir while editing a bibliography of graphic works of ethnic interest, and was intrigued enough to seek it out at the library. Thoroughly delightful; one feels like they are there with Briggs' parents, Ethel and Ernest, during some everyday events of their rich lives together.

It reminded me of the Classic comics I loved as a child--you were learning some history while the images enhanced the human interest aspect greatly. I bought this as a birthday present for my (Irish) sister-in-law, who grew up in England in the 1940's-1960's.

It's A Wonderful Life A True Story!

Raymond Briggs' graphic depiction of his parent's life together could be titled "It's A Wonderful Life a True Story". Mr. Briggs' talented artistry captures the true essence of his parent's life together. Utilizing more graphic depictions than actual dialogue, a true and sensitive story unfolds over a period of 41 years.
In this graphic biography, we see how life in England changes and how his parents reacted to these life altering events. The narrative is simple as we learn of Ethel and Ernest's desires and their set patterns and way of life. As a reader we get to see their true politics, biases and their take of what the world is and should be. Above all while it may show the usual marital spats, it shows a simple couple leading a simple life and above all content and happy with each other's company.

Fab addition to the Series New York City Docs #SamsStory

New York City Docs is a series about four flatmates and friends sharing an apartment trying to be the best they can be at the prestigious West Manhattan Saints Hospital. One Night in New York is Sam's story. I felt I already knew Sam from the previous books in the series and I was so happy to finally reach his story.

One night, in New York, Sam and Mindy have a one night stand... two strangers who have never met before and who aren't in the habit of having one night stands but the fates have bought them together, destined to never see each other again...

Unfortunately life doesn't always pan out that way so when they meet up in the morning, both parties could probably be knocked over with a feather. Dr Sam Napier is late for meeting the new Head of Maternal-Fetal medicine who was being introduced to the Peds floor. Desperate to be chosen for one of two opportunities to be granted a pediatric fellowship Sam knows he needs to impress the new Head. If receiving the fellowship had been based on his performance the night before the fellowship would have been all his I'm sure lol but unfortunately Dr Mindy Walker, the new Head of Maternal-Fetal medicine can't pick based on last nights performance.

Initially both mortified to see each other in such a professional capacity, One Night in New York tells the wonderful story of two people, amazing at what they do with bedside manners to die for (in more ways than one) and both trying so hard to succeed in a cut throat world and on the outside have it all but on the inside are both two lonely people. An amazing career doesn't keep you warm at night and the last thing Mindy can do is show any favoritism, not to mention NOT have a relationship with Sam but when you're destined to be together, friendship is a great place to start.

Set in a Manhattan winter I found One Night in New York to be an absolute delight with characters I warmed to and a tale I will read again. I loved the city setting and I found the pediatric medical details absolutely fascinating including the Quints. I loved the addition of Sam's mother and the barriers that caused. I was right there on the tourist visits Sam took Mindy on. I would highly recommend this read to anyone and everyone.

Fantastic Story

This is such a great story two people who have been through so much in their lives but have still come through with great careers as surgeons neither are looking for love or romance but when love finds them things become rocky but there needs to be a lot of opening up by them both.

Dr Mindy Walker has moved from her sunny California to a cold and wintery New York to take up a position at the West Manhattan Saints Hospital after divorcing her husband and leaving her best friend and on practically her first night there discovers and very gorgeous looking man in a bar and does something she has never done before has a one night stand that will change her life and start her on a path to happiness maybe.

Dr Sam Napier has been working at the hospital for years and is working hard to build his career as a pediatric surgeon on his own merits he does not want to get any position because of his mother who is a well known surgeon although born in New York he lived most of his life in Scotland with his father and he is such a caring but stubborn man and when he has a one night stand and then discovers that she is his new boss this really makes things hard for Sam.

This is such a beautiful and emotional story that will bring tears to your eyes and have you smiling as both Mindy and Sam open up to each other and overcome some tough times to finally realize their love for each other this one is fast paced the setting is fabulous and the characters are all rich in feelings and emotions this is one not to be missed.

Dr. Mindy Walker moved from California and her ex-husband and what she thought was her best friend to New York, New hospital.
Dr. Samuel Napier is a Scotsman by blood and American by birth. His father lives in Scotland, his mother in the states. He does not have a relationship with his mother other than for her to tell him he should be a neurosurgeon instead of wasting his time in Pediatric Surgery.
Sam was out for the night and was not looking for anyone. Mindy was out just to relax and they happened to find each other even though they were not looking for someone. She was starting at the new hospital the next day. She picks up a man who turned out to be Sam and they only exchanged first names. They were mutually attracted to each other. They went back to her place and the next morning she woke alone in her bed.
She gets to the hospital and instantly they both realize this could get complicated. Neither said they were doctors but they knew that since she was literally now his boss and him in running for a fellowship under Dr. Chang, that they had to tread lightly and not let it out about the night before.
They did become friends and he did take her on the New York tour of Lady Liberty, went out for tea and had a good time.
You must ready this wonderful love story to find out the ending. You will not be disappointed.

Incorrect Answer Key

This book is easy to read and comprehend for now. I just started the semester a week ago, so I am only 3 chapters in. I gave this 3 stars because the answer key in the back of the book is incorrect! I wanted to check my answers and some (not all) answers don't make any sense. Very disappointing. This should have been fixed prior to releasing the book to students who are trying to learn.

Ignore the one hostile and misguided review of this book

I would like to respond to the review below that says there is "nothing new" in this book, and I want to do it in a conspicuous place (not in an appended comment which people are less likely to click on), because that is an unjust and untrue remark. Also, the reviewer says that he would have appreciated the book if he had been reading it for a university course but that in his retirement he just wants the story. In the front matter of my copy of this book it says that this is part of a series "aimed primarily at advanced students and faculty." If he had bought a book on gourmet French cuisine, would he complain because the book didn't give instructions on how to fry up hot dogs and make scrambled eggs? I admit that I am a history professor (though not with a specialty in this period), and I found the book quite useful and readable. OF COURSE it reviews previous literature and gives a (somewhat dry) summary of the events of the period. That is what books like this are supposed to do, and Halsall does it quite well.

This is one of my favorite historical periods, and I've read a number of histories of this period, including most of the recent ones and had actually held off on purchasing this because I wondered if it would simply re-tread old ground. I'm pleased to say that this book was an excellent read and contained several highly original ideas that were well thought out and truly provided me with new ways of looking at the period. These include: the true nature of early barbarian settlement, the origin and role of Alaric; the formation of the Frankish kingdom; a quite well thought out analysis of developments in Britain after the fall that engaged the existing evidence to a greater degree than the many books that simply skip over this province, while stopping well short of some of the excesses in other books that analyze this same puzzle; the extent is Visigothic control over Spain, and the role of the moors in Africa and the Vandal kingdom; among other things.

In general, Halsall really excels at calling out the educated guesses made by historians about the period which have morphed over time into accepted facts. He reintroduces a healthy sense of uncertainty and offers up alternative ideas and explanations that encourage you to think more deeply about the period. The primary sources for the 5th century are thin and the desire to explain the fall of the Western Roman Empire in a simple narrative is strong. There is more than one way of interpreting the available evidence and opening the doors to other possibilities helps breath new life into the story of the fall of Rome.

That said, there were some parts of the book that made for slow reading. The obligatory historiography chapter and ethnicity chapter at times felt a bit like eating peas so I could get to dessert. Sure both concepts play an important role in understanding the period and are used to great effect in the subsequent history, they're just less interesting than the actual narrative and analysis that follows. Overall, I rate it 5 stars and would encourage anyone interested in the period to purchase this book, particularly if you've read and enjoyed other recent histories of the period (Wickham, Heather, etc).

The best textbook overview of the subject available

Guy Halsall's Barbarian Migrations and the Roman West is about the best book if you are looking for an overview of modern interpretations of the so called Migration Period. Despite the apparent regional limitation to the 'Roman West' the book also covers a lot of history relating to the 'Roman East' as well. It is a shame and unfair that the rating of this book was marred by a review how took issue with the price.

This is EMPOWERMENT!

I have cancer. I was told by my medical practitioners that my cancer was beyond their treatments - full body bone marrow involvement, etc. This was SEVEN YEARS AGO (1995). I relate this only as a statement of my "credentials" to offer this opinion to those who may have recently been handed the "medical Whammy" (a term coined by Andrew Weil, M.D.) of a life-threatening or terminal diagnosis. I do not credit Louise Hay's work with my current health; I only recently was gifted with a copy of this tape, which reinforces conclusions drawn from my own experience and personal journey.
Louise Hay does not offer "miracle cures," she offers HEALING concepts. She most emphatically DOES NOT place BLAME for an illness of any kind on the person with the illness, or their parents!!! Quite the opposite, which she clearly states on this tape, repeatedly. Nor does she pretend to have all the answers, or suggest anyone discard the counsel of their medical professionals.
What she DOES do is provide a wonderful collection of affirmations for personal empowerment - a course of action that enables one to regain some measure of control over their life - which, as anyone who has received a cancer diagnosis can tell you, is the first thing to go!
If you are looking for a cure - something done to you from outside - then you will not find it here. (Of course not! Our cultural fear of cancer is rooted in its medical status as "incurable.")
If, however, you are seeking help in HEALING - that which originates within - and you are ready to assume responsibility for your own life and become an active partner with your physicians in regaining your health, then I believe you will find much inspiration and positive energy in the loving words of Louise Hay, who has faced her own cancer, put her "philosophy" to the ultimate test, and triumphed.

Great Attitude Changer!

I will be a 20 year cancer survivor in remission this Nov. '08.

My mom had gotten me this in cassette tape in '88 when I was diagnosed with brain cancer at the age of 15. The docs. gave me 6 months to live then.

At the time of finding out about the cancer and the life expectancy I had gone into a depression.

My parents gave me this cassette and told me to listen to it everyday. I even went to sleep with this playing.

After 3-4 weeks my attitude changed and I felt more positive and just felt good inside.

I do feel this had helped me recover. Attitude is part of the battle. If you don't care or too depressed you won't fight the disease.

Her soothing voice helped me sleep at night along with the music in the background.

I'm ordering a copy on cd to replace my cassette. I highly recommend this to anyone that is sick.
