About the Author
BILL MORGAN is a Boston-area clinical psychologist and founding board member of the Institute for Meditation and Psychotherapy (IMP). He graduated from Tufts University in 1975 with a degree in Eastern Studies and earned his PsyD from the Massachusetts School of Professional Psychology in 1990. Over the past fifteen years, he has taught residential mindfulness retreats for mental health professionals and caregivers at the Barre Center for Buddhist Studies in Barre, Massachusetts, Vallecitos Mountain Ranch in New Mexico, Esalen in California, and Wonderwell, a Tibetan Buddhist center in New Hampshire. He is a contributor to the 2005 book Mindfulness and Psychotherapy (Guilford).

I love this book

I love this book. I am one of those meditators who struggled for years to sustain a regular practice. Eventually I gave myself permission to depart from the standard approaches to meditating and I created my own, much more sustainable practice. This included using visualization, sitting in a chair as opposed to cross-legged on the floor, and integrating movement into my meditation. Since then, I enjoy my practice and don't miss a day. This lovely book explores ways to transform a struggling practice into one of ease and delight. Bill provides guided meditations as well as other concrete suggestions for infusing your practice with new energy. This is a book to keep next to your cushion at all times!

A Welcome and Refreshing Guide for Frustrated Meditators

This groundbreaking book takes a fresh look at some of the problems faced by "mindfulness-challenged" Western meditation students. I'm currently using it in a mindfulness support group I lead, and the members are finding it extremely helpful. Bill Morgan's description of the "striving problem," his analysis of the differences between Eastern and Western cultural norms, and his call to make meditation more personal by creating one's own "inner holding environment" can be liberating to practitioners who have been frustrated in their attempts to slavishly adhere to instructions handed down to us by Asian meditation masters.

Written with the skillfulness of an experienced teacher and with the heart of a genuine human being. This is a wonderful book helpful to both the novice and experienced practitioner of meditation. A gentle reminder to release the need to strive for the practice to be a certain way and opening to allowing what is. An invitation to being!

Reciprocity

This is the most thought-provoking book I've read in quite a while.

Immigration is a subject it seems rather difficult to discuss without getting aerated one way or another, slipping into extreme positions, or suggesting platitudinous compromises that satisfy no-one.

But this book provides a cool, calm and closely argued overview of the subject from a comprehensive range of perspectives.

Each chapter is an essay on some aspect of immigration.

Chapter 1, 'A Suitcase in the Hall', looks at how so many immigrants initially arrive as 'guest workers', only here for a job, always looking to return to family and community, finding themselves slowly becoming residents, albeit within their own transplanted society, not really becoming a part of the society in which they still consider themselves temporary residents.

Chapter 2 expands on this. 'The World in the City' looks at how different immigrant communities slowly form within western cities, segregated in schools, inward looking, defensive:

'The monotonous high-rise blocks are speckled with satellite dishes tuned to a different reality. 'Dish city' symbolizes a world that's grown smaller in both sense, in which technological innovation helps to perpetuate a parochial way of life. A global village, indeed, but did the people who thought up that slogan ever consider the ways in which global communications can foster a village mentality?' (P43)

Chapter 3, 'The Great Migration', considers the reasons and impetus for the current waves of immigration. This is the only chapter to contain statistics and they make for interesting reading. To what extent is migration a form of 'development aid' as so many immigrants send money home? How are economic policies, such as protectionism for agricultural produce, fuelling immigration? Are we seeing a 'clash of civilisations'? And the end of 'nation states'?

Chapter 4 looks specifically at the Netherlands (Scheffer is Dutch). The Netherlands is famously tolerant, but how far should this tolerant country tolerate the intolerant? And to what extent is this famed tolerance merely a cover for indifference?

Following from this, Chapter 5 compares French, German and British experiences and histories of earlier migrations. Irish catholics in Britain, Poles to Germany (Prussia), Italians to France, amongst many other groups and nationalities.

Chapter 6 considers the effects of colonialism and post-colonialism. This chapter is fascinating, as it considers not only Darwinism, but also the growing subject of anthropology and its positing of cultural relativism:

'This tendency within anthropology has an explicit pedagogical goal: a recognition of the relativity of all morality will encourage politeness and respect in our dealings with people of other cultures. The defeat of ethnocentrism in Europe and America is therefore seen as a contributor towards peaceful coexistence of different cultural groups.' (P194)

Although conceived with the best of intentions, this really leads us into a very conservative position:

'Bias is democratised, as it were; everyone has a right to his own prejudices. No escape is possible, since we are all trapped in our own partiality. In this sense relativism is a form of conservatism; if we take the force of custom as a starting point, cultural innovation becomes hard to conceive. A critical morality, by contrast, aims to put cultural traditions up for negotiation in the name of universal values.' (P195)

Chapter 7 continues with a look at the history of immigration in the US, suggesting that there are surprising and illuminating parallels between Europe and the US. Initially, the US was a 'land of colonists'; only subsequently did it become a 'land of immigrants' and the various waves of immigration have each had their effects.

Chapter 8 looks at Islam. In this post-9/11 world, this is a crucial subject to consider and again Scheffer provides much food for thought. It seems too often that Muslims see themselves as 'victims' - Islam has stagnated largely because of 'Western imperialism and Israeli Zionism' (P274). But there are reformist thinkers who suggest that perhaps the fault has been at least in part within Islam itself. Initially a thriving society, it stagnated within a religious orthodoxy. Scheffer suggests that:

'[I]f Muslims intend to live in liberal democracies while retaining the idea that the Koran or the prophet are above all criticism and must never be the object of ridicule, then they condemn themselves to the role of eternal outsiders. Freedom for Muslims can be defended only if Muslims are willing to defend the freedom of their critics.' (P282)

Finally, Chapter 9, 'Land of Arrival' pulls many of the threads together, returning to the themes outlined in the opening chapters.

The pressure to allow immigration of unskilled, uneducated workers comes from business, a neoliberal 'laissez-faire' ideology, holding down the value of wages to the extent that 'indigenous' workers will not accept such pay and conditions, preferring instead to rely on welfare.

And then business has no further use for these low paid immigrants who, in the interim, have brought over their families and dependents.

So, from an initial immigrant population with 80% employment, we have an established community of immigrants with perhaps only 40% employment, the rest simply relying on welfare. The resentment of the indigenous population is understandable but, as Owen Jones suggests in his recent book 'Chavs', too often this resentment is used by 'liberals' to suggest that:

"they are defending immigrants from the "ignorant" white working class." (Johann Hari, quoted in 'Chavs: The Demonization of the Working Class' P 116)

In this book, Scheffer is not afraid to challenge this 'liberal class'. In fact, he points out that, although immigration might initially effect just those at the 'bottom' of the social pile, slowly the effects spread out and up.

But really, the main theme that Scheffer keeps coming back to, implicitly and explicitly, is 'reciprocation'. He challenges the French insistence on 'Frenchness' which alienates so many, the German post-World War II timidity and the much-vaunted British 'multiculturalism' (which, interestingly, he links to neoliberalism - 'Multiculturalism and market liberalism have a great deal in common in that they both seriously call in to question the value of the social compromise within the borders of Western countries.' (P92))

Scheffer states:

'...reciprocity is the key. Anyone wanting to challenge discrimination against migrants and their children must be prepared to oppose other forms of discrimination too - against unbelievers or homosexuals, for example. Mainly a European study, but with some reference and relevance to the USA

Although this book is written by a single author, the experience of reading it is reminiscent of attending a conference. There are well-informed and interesting chapters that would serve well as conference papers; points of view that are interesting because the point of view - frequently in this case Amsterdam and the Netherlands - is different from your own; assertions with which you would personally disagree; the odd piece of thinking that is indeed very odd (or perhaps it has just lost or gained something in translation); and you will definitely leave this 'conference' happy to have gained new insights and with plenty to continue to think about.

Different people will bring away different things, but among the nuggets to be picked-over is the insight that the problems that go with mass immigration from distant lands and cultures (there are benefits too) do not relate to immigrants alone but are deeply embedded in our wider society, regardless of immigration. Just how 'literate' is the general population? How good is the knowledge of any of us of the workings of our civic institutions? How engaged in 'society' are we as individuals, even to the undemanding extent of always voting in elections?

Scheffer quotes Elspeth Huxley, who wrote in 1965 "Immigrants have created few new problems, they have merely underscored those that already perplex our society."

One such problem is integral to the welfare state. Because most people are able to maintain a certain standard of living without undertaking onerous, dirty, low-paid work, we have to turn to ever-renewed waves of immigrants to undertake those tasks for us. In time, a goodly proportion of "guest workers" become permanent residents. They bring their families, produce a second generation.... and those among them who remain low-skilled eventually also find it better to be unemployed than to undertake certain tasks. Another wave of immigration is then required.

And which group in our society most wants and most benefits from a continuing flow of non-unionized people willing to accept low wages and unattractive working conditions? And who, through the taxation system, pays the much higher ultimate cost of that 'cheap' labor?

It's a tight knot of problems, taking in housing, education, language, religion, and very much more. Scheffer sometimes indulges in rhetoric, "living together requires commitment on both sides", but offers no ready solution. There is no ready solution. His extensive survey of previous waves of immigrants to Britain, Europe and elsewhere may provide comfort; historically, most immigrants have quickly come to see themselves as belonging wholeheartedly to their new country of residence. Problems meanwhile of poverty, illiteracy, juvenile delinquency (check out the origin of the word 'hooligan'), involvement in crime, and clashes with other racial groups are absolutely nothing new. However, Scheffer is no advocate of complacency, nor even of muddling along as we always have; given the actual and potential damage, destruction and unhappiness on all sides, he is most certainly right.

Expensive worksheets

This is one of the worst "teacher resources" I have encountered. This amounts to nothing more than an expensive collection of worksheets. I understand this is supposed to be college level material but this whole book feels more like a study guide than it does a textbook. This teacher's resource cd solidified the fact this book is poorly made. The worksheets are nothing more than a few problems thrown together as a supplement to the material we are supposed to teach for each section. The amount of material you receive for the cost is simply too disproportionate. I sincerely expected so much more for the cost.

This item received a 3 star rating because the disc adds a little more functionality to the book, which is a whole different issue. I do like that it includes labs for each section in a clear and concise manner. The CD is easy to use, and the materials and resources are separated by chapter and then by section. Works okay for what it is intended, but I simply cannot justify the price. If the price drops, it is worth a purchase, but do not pay full price, there just isn't enough here for what they are charging.

A Remarkable Analysis of 9/11

I don’t often review books, but decided to review this one for a number of reasons. First, its author is an eminent physical scientist as well as having an admirable grasp of world geopolitical realities. So, I find him more qualified than most to authoritatively digest and cogently explain what took place on 9/11 affecting the world in general on that awful focal day, which most contemporary writers opt to blink (or wink) out of view as an event in itself, and set it into universally meaningful context. Dr. Kamran’s writing is unusually clear, hence the sometimes abstruse content he discusses is made uncommonly comprehensible.

Second, his is a clear voice coming from the Muslim world, something habitually touted by westerners as an impossible contradiction of terms. He succeeds at performing this reputed feat – seemingly without effort – because his is not a voice of Islam or theocracy, but one of science (something that has gotten him into considerable trouble at times in the realm in which he lives, just as it has the too-rare western scientific voices, since Galileo and even back to Socrates, who have placed scientific principles in the forefront). As an important consequence, Dr. Mujahid doesn’t go in for judgment-clouding sectarian denouncement or attribution without specific evidence. His tone is determinedly descriptive, penetrating and far-reaching, not bombastic. He seems to me a surprising model for all of us in those respects.

Third, this book, while not particularly lengthy, is the most comprehensive single-volume digest of all that is known and most plausibly conjectured about both 9/11 itself and the broader unfolding conspiratorial context that produced it, as well as manifold other artificially (i.e., by artifice) added and deliberately-produced woes and atrocities from which the populace of the earth suffers and is overdue for radical redress.

Dr. Mujahid Kumran, a man in his mid-60s, educated in his native Pakistan, in Saudi Arabia, and at Scotland’s Edinburgh University, is a longtime professor of physics and Vice-Chancellor at Punjab University in Lahore. He is also the author of several previous books on physical science and biography, etc., and of The Grand Deception: Corporate America and Perpetual War (2011).

The book I am reviewing here is an information-filled exploration of both 9/11 and the ‘New World Order’ controlled by nabobs of global central banking. This truly remarkable book, published in Pakistan on September 11, 2013, is 384 pages in length, including index, and offers simply the best, clearest, and most readable survey of the identity and nature of the NWO I’ve seen to date, to which he attributes the inspired forces culminating in and deftly dodging responsibility ever since for the 9/11 debacle. As I’ve mentioned in passing, one thing I’m impressed about with this book is its clear but careful balanced approach. Although emanating from a Muslim country, the book refers to the apparent Israeli involvement matter-of-factly, exhibiting no signs of anti-Semitic bigotry.

As for 9/11, Dr. Kamran surveys the known and sensibly surmised facts with studied thoroughness, adding trenchant interpretive observations of his own throughout that I found to really make a great deal of sense. This factual and annotative tendency characterized as well his stellar technical treatment as a scientist of nanothermite, its nature, presence, and apparent usage and a slew of other physical evidence and aspects of evidence, on which he convincingly demonstrated his particular fitness to address. But yet, the presentation in the book remains exceedingly clear, easy to follow, and compulsive reading.

Personally, I thought I’d seen and read most of the credible material in book form regarding 9/11 and it anomalies – like a number of you, I’m sure, my shelves contain scores of such volumes. Yet Dr. Kamran cites and quotes extensively from both sources I was familiar with, and also from lots and lots of books and authors of obviously wonderful books and articles I’d never heard of before – certainly a rare feat for a scientifically-attuned author in a part of the world as far afield as Pakistan. Plus, I gained a ton of new, fresh information and perspective-changing insights.

IMHO, every serious student of its two perceptively entwined subjects should obtain and read this book. My copy arrived direct from Lahore, Pakistan, in a package that would be a stamp-collector’s dream. Though available from Amazon.com and elsewhere on line, it’s not cheap to buy, but well worth the price. And if you search a bit, you can find a copy for less. Heartily recommended.

You Heard it From the Man

You've heard the line, "sticking it to the man." Well, Robert Townsend was the man. As a top executive at Avis, Hertz, and American Express his good nature and not-so-common sense saved these companies. This is an anthology book with a series of moral lessons for managers everywhere---read it! Read his second book too: "Further Up the Organization." In the second book, he recounts how as an executive at American Express he was rebuffed by an accountant. He explained that he needed to buy one of those new fangled (it was the 70's) calculators for an accounts manager. He then added that the calculator would pay for itself in minutes with what it would save AMEX. Without blinking, the accountant said, "If it's not in your budget, you can't have it." Townsend just said, "Oh," and started writing a memo. After a few minutes, he handed it to the accountant. He said,"Sign here." The accountant looked at it and exclaimed,"This is your resignation! I'm not signing that." Townsend said, "Yes you are." Then, he said, "When I resign I am going to hand this memo to my boss, the CEO. He's going to want to know why I resigned and I want to tell him." The accountant turned gray. Townsend got his calculator. You will find amusing and interesting stories in both books. What he said then rings true today. If only we had executives like him today. Instead, we have people like Lay, Skilling, and Fastow: only out for themselves, with egos the size of the mansions they aspire to own.

A classic!

This is a 30 year old classic I recently re-read for the 3rd time. It has logical and pragmatic approaches in bite size messages that remain timely.

Robert Townsend established himself and his company as the one "who tried harder" to meet customer needs. This book is an ABC manual of common sense business strategies beginning with Advertising and ending with Wearing out one's Welcome. He tackles nepotism, useless meetings, egos, in house politics, accountability and much more.

Townsend co-authored work with Tom Peters later in his career and one can see the influences they shared and believe in.

An excellent read- a classic!

A heartwarming inspiration for people with the courage to remake organizations from the inside out!

A brilliant, heartwarming book, especially if you've been wondering why companies never seem to behave as well as, in your childish expectations, you had always thought they would...

Townsend writes in the 1960s, after having turned around first the credit card division of American Express and then the whole company Avis Rent-a-Car, as in "We're No. 2 -- We Try Harder." If you were around then, you remember that Avis was the Rodney Dangerfield of service companies ("I can't get no respect") that turned into a giant-killer eating Hertz's lunch (to mix at least two metaphors) under Townsend's skillful direction.

The book contains several handfuls of short vignettes -- prescriptions on a number of topics, from a few sentences to a few pages long, for what he thinks you should do if you run your own company, and why. Taken together, they describe a vision of corporate life lived honorably and joyfully, to the benefit of all -- stockholders, customers, employees and the community at large. And it all sounds so simple! You read what he says about the photocopier, for example (did you know that the most important job in doing a late night deal may be running the photocopier, which is why the CEO will do it if there's no one else available?), or about locating your headquarters (Mars?, not quite, but there's an influence there!), and you say, "hey, *I* could do that if I were running a company, and it sure would make things better!" From how to create advertising (Avis had only half the resources of Hertz, so they figured they had to buy advertising with more than twice the impact in order to beat their competition) to how *not* to structure the executive committee, Townsend writes brilliantly funny exposes of how corporations usually work and of the obvious alternatives that, once pointed out, sound convincing and empowering. And he's not just guessing; he did all these things, and Wall Street rewarded the corporations that winningly hired him to do so.

If you're feeling down, disheartened, or unsure that work life will ever make you proud or happy, then Townsend's humorously-told stories of an insightful pruning of overweight corporations into trim fighting firms -- firms which actually respect people, both without and within -- may make your year.

Can't recommend it highly enough. Deserves to be on every well-intentioned leader's bookshelf.

Put This Book at the Top of Your List

There are a lot of books on how to compose pleasing images. A lot. And I've read a lot of them. But if you want to cut to the chase and learn how to compose images that are brimming with visual energy, then I highly recommend reading "See It: Photographic Composition Using Visual Intensity" by Ellen and Josh Anon. The authors not only break down elements that add visual energy to photographs, but they also explain "why" each element adds to the energy or intensity. And when you understand the "why's" of visual intensity, then you can quickly get to the heart of the scene or subject when you're shooting.

The first part of the book offers in-depth information on visual and compositional elements including light, lines, shapes, textures, color, framing, and storytelling. Next, the authors evaluate a series of images in the Putting It All Together chapter. Then they walk readers through the process of creating images with visual intensity both in the field during shooting and during image editing. In addition, the book is generously and beautifully illustrated. By the time you finish the book, you'll have a good understanding of what it takes to make strong images with maximum visual impact.

If you're serious about moving your photography to the next level, then this book should be at the top of your list.

A New Approach

All of technique, e.g., shutter speed, focusing, and aperture, has only one purpose: the composition. The composition is ultimately how the photographer conveys his vision to the viewer. In this book Josh and Ellen Anon suggest a new approach to composition, visual intensity. Roughly speaking, visual intensity refers to the amount of energy in a photograph, but even that definition is only a very rough description.

After defining visual intensity, the book reviews the usual compositional elements like perception; lines, shapes and textures; color; framing; light; and visual story telling, pointing out how each contributes to visual intensity. At the same time the authors review traditional rules of composition, like the rule of thirds and horizon placement. The authors then show a portfolio of works by different renowned photographers, explaining how the concept of visual intensity contributes to each image. The next chapter shows how the previously explored concepts apply to capturing images in the field. The authors demonstrate how the rules of visual intensity apply to digital processing, and then mention a few other creative techniques like high dynamic range photography.

This is my first contact with the concept of visual intensity and I found it quite useful as an approach to composition different from traditional rules. Most photographers, regardless of skill level, will benefit from studying this approach, although it would be useful to have some experience as a photographer to best apply the approach. For example, in post processing, the explanation of how to use Lightroom, Aperture, Photoshop and plug-ins like NIK Color Effects Pro to control visual intensity will only be understood by those familiar with post-processing software, even though the authors writing style is quite clear. Similarly, one should have a good understanding of exposure and focus.

I did have one objection. Sidebars are printed on a light-blue background, with grey sans-serif print that is extremely difficult to read. I think it's time for the publisher to evaluate its use of fonts in its instructional manuals. Nevertheless, the book is good enough and important enough that this one fault shouldn't stop photographers from reading it.

I consider this one of the most important books on photography techniques printed this year, and recommend it highly.

This is an incredibly detailed well written book on the important aspect of photography. I would add this to the great classic on composition, Richard Zakia's Perception and Photography, which I use to recommend to my photography students.
Ellen has a unique background that makes her well prepared to write this book. She is a psychologist who took up photography latter in life. Her psychological training and background enabled her to study, examine, and explain what elements make up a compelling strong photographic image.
After learning the techniques and science of photography this should be the book that will take your images to the next level from technically proficient to having great impact and composition.
Having taught photography for over 20 yrs, I would have to say this book is a must read for people wanting to improve there images.
