Hugely promising; far too many errors

I was very excited about Sinclair's "Volatility Trading" about halfway into it and enthusiastically recommended it to many of my colleagues. There are several great points here, all of which are covered in a concise manner geared toward professionals (which is itself refreshing, and far too rare in the genre). Highlights include a nice overview of various volatility estimators (including some newer ones), a nifty intuitive derivation of BSM, a very interesting treatment of near-"optimal" hedging methods, a discussion of how to quantify market impact, and a useful chapter on the path-dependency of derivative payouts.

However, after finishing the book, I had to temper my early recommendation severely: there are far too many obvious errors, which makes me suspect there are probably also many other, less-obvious ones (and causes me to wonder whether all the five-star reviewers here actually read the entire book carefully). A few of the most egregious examples:

* The butterfly payout diagram on p. 77 is upside down!
* Implied and realized vol terms are reversed in formula 5.1.
* "w" in formula 6.2 should be "l".
* p. 105 asks us to "differentiate with respect to x", but there is no "x". "f" is intended.
* Formula 6.11 is rendered nonsense by the very strange term (I am assuming a bizarre typo): "ln[()] 1".
* Missing parens around a subtraction on p. 113, giving the wrong result.
* Typos in formula 7.7 render it useless ("GC" in the numerator means GG, and "GC" in the demoninator means GB).

I searched for an errata list online but to no avail. I think a revised edition is badly in order.

It takes a lot of experience, time, and energy to know - and I mean really know - what Sinclair shares in this book

Over the course of my career I have come to own literally hundreds of books about derivatives pricing and trading. Few of these books manage to communicate the essence of what a professional derivatives trader needs to do to be successful. Volatility Trading is truly rare in that it presents a framework for analysis that is supported by a clear, well-defined trading philosophy: systematically find an edge and learn how to exploit it correctly. It takes a lot of experience, time, and energy to know - and I mean really know - what Sinclair shares in this book.

I found the chapter on volatility measurement and forecasting to be particularly useful. Few options traders take the time to understand the efficiency of their volatility estimators. Even fewer could clearly communicate that what we need is a view on the volatility distribution rather than a point forecast when we are trading volatility.

The author's mix of trading philosophy, quantitative intuition, and obvious trading experience is refreshing. The straight-forward no nonsense writing style also makes the book very readable. In "Volatility Trading" Euan Sinclair presents a compilation of the most notable features of many, many theorists. A lot of the theories have no practical value but they do make colourful commentary that leads to a meaningful conclusion. In addition he includes a potpourri of formulae including the Corrado and Su formula for including kurtosis and skewness in the normal Black Scholes Merton model call value. The Corrado Su skew curve, skew and kurtosis cones and volatility cones are included in files on the CD-Rom which accompanies the book.
Please note that Sinclair states that most of the information in " Options, Futures and other Derivatives" by John C Hull is prerequisite to reading his book. Sinclairs book is not suitable for beginners.

Good Outlines, Every Third Solution, and Almost All Solutions Are Clear

The guide provides solutions of every other question as well as outlines of each section and some hints (occasional solutions) of the more theoretically involved questions. Ernest Adams:

One day I received a letter from Andrew Rollings asking if I would like to co-author a book on game design. Andrew had already written the highly successful Game Architecture and Design with Dave Morris, so I knew he would be a good collaborator. It didn’t take me long to say yes. We first met in a restaurant, and blocked out the chapter plan over dinner. Andrew would write the chapters on storytelling and core mechanics, I would write the ones on concepts and worlds, and we’d split the genre chapters between us according to interest and experience.

Philosophically, we were very much on the same wavelength. We wanted to be definitive without being dictatorial, and comprehensive but still concise. We wanted to write a book that designers and students could turn to for specific advice. We don’t tell you exactly what to do. Instead we tell you what to think about, identifying the major questions that every designer must face. We don’t design your game for you; we give you the tools to help you design it yourself, including numerous examples from current and earlier games.

It has been a long, hard road. But we got there in the end and we’re proud of our work. We hope you’ll find it valuable.

One of the best

Having read "Game Architecture and Design", which I consider the best game design book written, I was anxious for the follow-up from Andrew Rollings. I was not disappointed. Overall, this book covers unique material, but is aimed more toward the less experienced game designer. It's a great companion to his first book.
I highly recommend both books, and I suggest reading this latest book, co-authored by Ernest Adams, first, and then follow-up with the larger, more advanced book co-authored by Dave Morris. Together, they provide a comprehensive guide to making fun, successful games.

I happened to see this book when traveling--in a bookshop in Cologne, Germany. It contains only pictures, and I was riveted to the spot as I "read" through the frames. When I returned to the states, I read more about the book and the author--and ordered the book. I'm still in awe of how these haunting pictures speak to the alienation that immigrants (or others who are plunged into a totally new situation) experience--all without words. My grandfather was an immigrant from Poland in the late 19th century--how I wish I could show him this book.

This book makes me smile so much. I originally got it as a required book for a class I took, but it was one of the few I've actually kept instead of selling/donating over the years. It doesn't matter what your native language is, or even if you're literate; there are no words in this story. Tan did a fantastic job describing a story and fleshing out a world with only still images. The sad and even ominous parts feel perfectly paced. It's an unconventional way to tell a story and it was executed wonderfully.

Ethereal, yet poignant; enigmatic, yet universal--Shaun Tan's graphic novel "The Arrival" draws the "reader/viewer" into a strange and foreign world as seen from the viewpoint of a man who leaves his poor family and home country, and travels to a new world looking for better life. The nameless man in this wordless novel must learn to cope in this odd and confusing world where he doesn't understand the language, or even weird foods and creatures. He encounters a bizarre-looking tadpole-shaped white animal who loyally remains with him throughout all of his adventures. He takes on the daunting task of finding lodging, food and employment in a huge industrialized city unlike anything he has ever seen. Or could imagine!

Along the way he meets up with some fellow emigrants who share their own stories with him, and, in that way, they form a bond of understanding. Each fellow traveler has apparently escaped from his or her own terrifying and dangerous situation to come to this "new world". Some of these pictures depict a landscape reminiscent of post-war Europe. I noticed that the three to six page mini-bios of the others is set off in the book with a darker frame. This helps keep the "flow" of the story comprehensible. One family in particular befriend the "arriver" in the book, and extend to him a sense of belonging which, after all, is the human need that every person in every country needs most.

I love the art work. The elaborately detailed pencil drawings communicate the overwhelming plight that the immigrant must deal with in a way that words could not, I think. Tan obviously put a tremendous amount of thought and work into these astonishingly imaginative illustrations. Some of the frames are like stop-action film. They slow the narrative down so that one can focus in on the process he goes through. Some offer a meditation of small details along his travels--such as twenty-five small frames of clouds seen along the boat trip. Then, again, some offer huge sweeping vistas of the confusing new world--vast city-scapes.

Eventually his wife and daughter are able to rejoin him. This helps him further to establish roots in his new home. Soon thereafter, he sends daughter out to buy some food (with the doggy-like friend)and she encounters a woman puzzling over a map. The girl, who by now is somewhat acclimated, stops to help the woman, who is a new "arrival", and points the way for her, and thus the cycle repeats. It is, for me, a very satisfying way to end the story.

This is a book to be savored and re-read. The stark and often dark pictures belie a beautiful story that puts the reader into a frame of contemplation. Mr. Tan confronts the universal issue of "strangers in a strange world", and how we form a sense of belonging as we connecting with each other and learn to negotiate the strangeness of the world.

Dan Jurgens is a writer and artist most famous for creating Booster Gold as well as for being one of the main forces behind "The Death of Superman." He has written and/or illustrated titles such as JUSTICE LEAGUE AMERICA, Captain America, The Sensational Spider-Man, Thor, TEEN TITANS, AQUAMAN, DC's Tangent imprint, and the DC crossover known as ZERO HOUR.

Karl Kesel loves his job far more than he has any right to. Over the past 25 years he has written, inked, and occasionally penciled most of the major comics publishers' major characters -- including Superman, Superboy, Spider-Man, Fantastic Four, and Captain America -- although he has an inexplicable fondness for minor, obscure characters no one else remembers.

Jerry Ordway has been writing, drawing,and painting comic books professionally since 1980 - specifically on such titles as ALL-STAR SQUADRON, CRISIS ON INFINITE EARTHS, SUPERMAN, POWER OF SHAZAM, WildStar, Fantastic Four, Avengers, Tom Strong, WONDER WOMAN, The Messenger, and Proton.

Roger Stern has written for radio, television, the stage, and the Internet, creating scripts for everything from sketch comedy to flash-animation. For ten years, he was the senior writer of the Superman series, and has written hundreds of stories about such diverse characters as Green Lantern, Supergirl, Starman, and the Justice League for DC Comics; and Spider-Man, Captain America, the Incredible Hulk, and the Avengers for Marvel. It might make readers depressed, but it will inspire them to not give up. That life goes on and the spirit of hope can rise again.

Mary Anne Poatsy, MBA, CFP
Mary Anne is an adjunct faculty member at Montgomery County Community College, teaching various computer application and concepts courses in face-to-face and online environments. Mary Anne holds a B.A. in Psychology and Elementary Education from Mount Holyoke College and an MBA in Finance from Northwestern University’s Kellogg Graduate School of Management. Mary Anne has more than nine years of educational experience, ranging from elementary and secondary education to Montgomery County Community College, Muhlenberg College, and Bucks County Community College, as well as training in the professional environment. Prior to teaching, Mary Anne was a vice president at Shearson Lehman Hutton in the Municipal Bond Investment Banking department.

Horrible start to learning technology.

My wife is taking a college course based around this book. Im a systems engineer so my wife has been asking me many questions about the information in this book. I cannot recall raging so hard at a book in my life. The terms and concept in this book are out of this world inaccurate and do not mirror real world IT whatsoever. If you need this book for some class for a degree I'm sorry. This book will do nothing but make you sound incompetent and incorrect if you ever attempt to use this information in front of an IT professional. If you are a college professor please rethink using this book for your students. You are setting them up for failure.

Required for Class, Couldn't read online

This was a required textbook for a class I was in. I love the ability to get my books digitally, but was frustrated to find that this was only able to be read on the Kindle Fire. I bought a Fire with a small screen to save space, knowing that I could read books on my laptop when I needed to view the full pages. This feature wasn't available to me in the digital purchase. Had I known this in advance I would have most likely purchased a hard copy. It left me very frustrated over the course of my semester.

I have tried a galaxy 5S, a tablet, and a lap top and it's not compatible with anything. It, to be perfectly clear, sucks eggs.
