Starred Review. Life coach Miller collaborates with Frisch, a researcher and clinical psychologist, to create a fascinating book that connects the research on goal-setting with the new science of positive psychology. Turns out these two have a symbiotic relationship, for as Miller says, [H]appiness requires having clear-cut goals in life that give us a sense of purpose and direction.... when we make progress toward attaining goals in one area of life, we raise our overall life satisfaction in other areas because of the 'spillover' effect. Each chapter focuses on ways to increase happiness and self-efficacy, and directs readers to a particular life list at the back of the book. These range from 100 Things to Do Before I Die to a list of mood-boosters that bring Jolts of Joy or a Web of Influence Map, where readers can chart how the closest people in their lives reflect their values; research indicates that rates of obesity and smoking are determined by who we socialize with. The authors share ingenious tips on reminders (cellphone ring tones, screen savers) that will help readers achieve long-term goals by suggestion. An excellent resource list rounds out the book. Review
Instead of making New Year's resolutions, it may be more beneficial to assemble a goal-setting list. So believe positive psychologist/life coach Miller and clinical psychologist Frisch (Baylor Univ.), who have put together dozens of interactive exercises and assessments to guide readers in self-discovery and life-list creation. Whether or not readers follow through with every assignment, they will undoubtedly be inspired to think about goals and live more consciously and productively. Recommended for all libraries. --Library Journal

Highly recommended for life coaches and their clients
By Dr. Cathy Goodwin
A good book that brings some sanity and science to the world of self-help. They present a number of strategies that won't be new to anyone familiar with self-help and life coaching.

Outstanding chapter on "prime," i.e, environmental influences on behavior. For instance, people made different choices when a briefcase was on a table than when a backpack was in the same place.

Best parts:

Good discussion goals and the inadequacy of the "SMART" goal acronym.

Excellent chapter on "grit" and determination.

Based on solid research, not just a series of anecdotes.

Nice worksheets and exercises.

Weak points:

As in most self-help books, the authors give examples of people who were rewarded by doing the "right" thing. For instance, they show people who benefited from taking risks. By definition, risks can have negative consequences, too. I would like to see some examples of people who took risks that did not work out, but turned the situation around or were glad they took the risk. Colette Dowling's book, The Cinderella Complex, includes a cautionary tale of the wrong kind of risk-taking.

The chapter on relationships is geared toward the "married with children" set. Considerable research shows that making friends has become increasingly difficult. Adding friends on Facebook or connections on LinkedIn rarely leads to meaningful relationships; they're more helpful for business and career.

The discussion of retirement follows the stereotype that older people want to trade off money for "doing good."

Many action suggestions are impractical. For instance, The section on neighborhood makes suggestions that will be difficult for many people especially those living in a city.

Definitely recommended with a caveat that some strategies will be challenging to apply to your own life.

persisting at meaningful life challenges
By Todd B. Kashdan
There are far too many self-help books out there and in recent years, an abundance of books on happiness. Miller & Frisch distinguish their book from the pack. It is nearly impossible to read this book without reflecting on your life goals, what exists in your life that facilitates them, what obstacles get in the way, what successes can you build on from your past, and most interestingly, what occurs on the fringes of conscious awareness that pushes you toward your goals or pulls you away from them. Despite studying and teaching positive psychology for nearly a decade, I found myself scribbling all over the pages. By the time I finished, a list of new life goals emerged, elaborating new meaningful themes to direct my limited time and energy.

I suspect people are skeptical of a book titled "Creating your best life" and they should be. The authors seem to beckon skepticism and in response, do an excellent job of providing the scientific basis for the main points and exercises in every chapter. The reason that this book is compelling is that it has great forward momentum. If you ever read a book written by scientists, you know that smooth prose is the exception not the rule. This book is an easy read (and I mean this as a profound compliment). Guided by ample scientific research, this book provides the necessary tools for someone to immediately improve their quality of life.

Create your own life
By Steve Burns
If you are looking for a book to help you draw out a map of your future, this is it. I have always been big about writing out goals and achieving them. This one task has kept put me on a track to achieve success in many areas of life. Like losing 60 pounds, acquiring a large net worth, becoming debt free, having a happy marriage, and many other smaller things. I believe you will never get any where unless you know where you are going. I have read several books on writing goals and this one is by far the best. This books author connects the research on goal setting with the new science of positive psychology, giving us all the tools we could ever need to move ahead in life and keep going past every setback or challenge that will occur. The book is based on research not on the authors personal opinion. That is what I like about the book, it is backed by science and statistics. The book gives you seventeen areas of life to construct your priorities with from health, self-esteem, values, spiritual life, money, work, play, learning, creativity, service, love, friends, children, relatives, home, neighborhood, and community. It will allow you to focus your time and energy on areas that you find most important. The back of the book has several exercises you can go through to get your creative juices flowing along with a 100 item "bucket list" you can create for yourself. This book really shows you step by step what you will need to achieve your goals. You will need to develop willpower, you will see how to get it. You have to take educated risks. You will need relationships with people that support you in your goals. You have to have the grit to not quit when setbacks occur. See how to write your own brief but powerful mission statement. Celebrate the wins along your journey. The speed bumps might slow you down but do not let them stop you. This book covers all these principles in great detail. This is one of the five books I will give to my children on their 18th birthday. I wish I would have had this book when I was young. I did have a book about written goals and it has been a powerful life guiding principle for me for the past twenty. I will return to this book for many years as I accomplish my bucket list. This is a book that will change your life if you let it.

Black Labor, White Wealth: The Search for Power and Economic Justice, by Claud Anderson

Dr. Anderson's first book is a classic. It tracks slavery and Jim Crow public policies that used black labor to construct a superpower nation. It details how black people were socially engineered into the lowest level of a real life Monopoly game, which they are neither playing or winning. Black Labor is a comprehensive analysis of the issues of race. Dr. Anderson uses the anaylsis in this book to offer solutions to America's race problem.

Working While Black
By Carole
This small book explains what I have seen throughout my 40 years of work life. It pulls it all together into one concise package. It also gives a plan for improving the working life and economy of the Black communities around the country. This is a good read for a quick study.

I truly loved reading this book
By Charles E. Johnson Jr.
I truly loved reading this book. I rate it 5 stars and more. This book should be at every Black University and Urban schools in this country. It educated me into the major reasons as to why Black Americans find themselves in their current conditions. As I witness the news and social media, and I watch how our current US Representatives, State Representatives and Local Representatives obstruct our progress for economic growth, social freedoms, educational opportunities, police massive killings of young Black men and Black women in the streets of our nation and poor housing. This book fills in the blanks. Every Black American should have this book in their homes. Maybe after reading this book, we as Black Americans can begin to start working together for our common clause. Nobody wants to speak the truth, Dr. Claud Anderson has done that. I only hope we Black folks are listening.

The Zen Teaching of Homeless Kodo, by Kosho Uchiyama Roshi, Shohaku Okumura

Abandon your treasured delusions and hit the road with one of the most important Zen masters of twentieth-century Japan.

Eschewing the entrapments of vanity, power, and money, "Homeless" Kodo Sawaki Roshi refused to accept a permanent position as a temple abbot, despite repeated offers. Instead, he lived a traveling, "homeless" life, going from temple to temple, student to student, teaching and instructing and never allowing himself to stray from his chosen path. He is responsible for making Soto Zen available to the common people outside of monasteries.

His teachings are short, sharp, and powerful. Always clear, often funny, and sometimes uncomfortably close to home, they jolt us into awakening.

Kosho Uchiyama expands and explains his teacher's wisdom with his commentary. Trained in Western philosophy, he draws parallels between Zen teachings and the Bible, Descartes, and Pascal. Shohaku Okumura has also added his own commentary, grounding his teachers' power and sagacity for the contemporary, Western practitioner.

Experience the timeless, practical wisdom of three generations of Zen masters.

"Sawaki Roshi's profound and simple Dharma expression comes from the depth of his empty, open heart, like the light of the sun or the flow of a river, pure and unhindered, touching and awakening that same place in ourselves." (Mel Weitsman, founder of Berkeley Zen Center)

"Provides pure, rich examples of living the Buddha Way by three renowned contemporary Zen practitioners. Filled with glimpses into their daily lives, it is replete with teachings that directly point to letting go of confusion and wholeheartedly living our actual lives." (Steve Hagen, author of Buddhism Plain & Simple)

"Clear and conversational. The variety among the three voices encourages the emergence of a fourth: yours, as you browse and come back again and again." (Jisho Warner, founder of Stone Creek Zen Center)

"A wonderful opportunity to catch a glimpse of a vibrant lineage in action and an invaluable contribution to all schools of meditative living." (Larry Rosenberg, author of Breath by Breath)

"Kodo Sawaki was straight-to-the-point, irreverent, and deeply insightful—and one of the most influential Zen teachers for us in the West. Until now it has been very hard to find any of his writings in English. I'm very happy to see this book." (Brad Warner, author of Hardcore Zen)

"Studying this book is a rare chance to sit with three Zen masters as they bring forth the Dharma with their unique family style—compassionate, blunt, humorous, wholehearted—each one devotedly helping the other and helping us to wake up." (Eijun Linda Ruth Cutts, Central Abbess, San Francisco Zen Center)

"Shohaku Okumura is a true treasure for contemporary American Zen, humbly but clearly expressing this noble legacy." (Taigen Dan Leighton, author of Zen Questions)

A Bit Too Negative
By M
Good not great. I wanted to really like this book. And I do like a lot of the ideas. But I think the collection of quotes and commentary could have been stronger and a touch more practically oriented. It feels like too many pages are spend on negative comments, denigrating people who don't follow The Way. And while it makes sense why they feel such people are not following The Way, and perhaps they're even right, still, such negativity doesn't really seem in the Zen spirit being helpful to those who may not have found their way yet.

Description
By Kaiyo
This little gem of a book is a collection of the teachings of Kodo Sawaki Roshi (1880-1965), with a commentary by his main disciple, Kosho Uchiyama Roshi. Because of Sawaki Roshi's continuous travels throughout Japan to practice zazen with people everywhere, he began to be called "homeless Kodo."

I have been involved with the study and practice of many different forms of buddhist spirituality over the last 28 years...The wisdom, compassion, and humor that resonate from the reading of this book are astounding! Given the simplicity of the writing, I could recommend this book strongly to almost anyone, even those who knew relatively little about buddhist philosophy etc

Democracy's Body: Judson Dance Theater, 1962-1964 (Studies in The Fine Arts), by Sally Banes

Democracy's Body offers a lively, detailed account of the beginnings of the Judson Dance Theater--a popular center of dance experimentation in New York's Greenwich Village--and its place in the larger history of the avant-garde art scene of the 1960s. JDT started when Robert Dunn, a student of John Cage, offered a dance composition class in Merce Cunningham's studio. The performers--many of whom included some of the most prominent figures in the arts in the early sisties--found a welcome performance home in the Judson Memorial Church in the Village. Sally Banes's account draws on interviews, letters, diaries, films, and reconstructions of dances to paint a portrait of the rich culture of Judson, which was the seedbed for postmodern dance and the first avant-garde movement in dance theater since the modern dance of the 1930s and 1940s. Originally published in 1983, this edition brings back into print a highly regarded work of dance history.

Review
"Anyone interested in choreography or methods of teaching composition must have this book on the shelf. . . Th[is] book is crucial in understanding our history and in appreciating the shape of dance today. Dancers and choreographers need to read it to learn about their heritage, historians to discover clarity about a rambunctious and exciting period of dance history that has been fuzzy with myth and misunderstanding. . . It must be read."—Sally Sommer, Dance Research Journal (from a review of the 1983 edition)

"Ms. Banes is widely respected as the leading scholar/historian writing about this seminal and neglected period of contemporary dance history. . . Her books are indispensable for any serious dance historian or student of this era. . . Democracy's Body is the type of inaugural survey of a period of art that will undoubtedly inspire other books."—Janice Ross, Stanford University

"Sally Banes is one of the most influential dance historians in America right now. The Judson Era, which Democracy's Body examines in meticulous detail, is a key moment in American dancing."—Mindy Aloff, Dance Critic, The New Yorker

Judson Dance Theater: Everything You Need To Know
By Sarah Hauss
This book is an historical account of the Judson Dance Theater. Through interviews of the members of Judson, reviews, and research, Banes creates an incredibly thorough documentation of these two years. Every teacher, mentor, advisor, critic, dancer, choreographer, visual artist, musician, critic, stage manager, and lighting designer connected either directly or peripherally with the Judson Group is mentioned in this book. Vivid descriptions of the dances in each concert have been pieced together through Bane's extensive research. The title refers to the Judson commitment to the collective process and the reduction of hierarchical relationships between dancers and choreographers, traditional technique and pedestrian movement, and content and form. Numerous artists from different mediums participated in the over 200 dances presented by Judson Theater in the 2 years that the group was active. Some notable members include: Trisha Brown, Yvonne Rainer, Steve Paxton, Fred Herko, Elaine Summers, Robert Morris, Deborah and Alan Hay, David Gordon, Judith and Robert Dunn, Lucinda Childs, and Robert Rauschenberg.
Bane's thoroughness makes the book a bit dense in places. I sometimes longed for visual aides when I read the detailed descriptions of the dances in each concert. Yet, also due to this thoroughness, I felt that I really got to know some of the personalities involved in the group, such as; Steve Paxton and Yvonne Rainer. I particularly enjoyed learning about the development and flux in momentum of this revolutionary moment in dance.
It was a wonderful surprise to be introduced to the writings of critic Jill Johnston through this book. I reccomend "Marmalade Me" (a collection of Jill's writings from 1960-69) as a compliment to this book.
