Fire The Editor, No, Wait They Already Did That!

This book must have been scanned and then published before anyone read it at all. Even dumping it into Word and doing a spell check would have caught many of the errors. It galls me that electronic book buyers pay more for these books than they would pay as paperbacks but to have the publishers not even take the time to edit them is criminal. Do the authors even care about the lack of professionalism. The word Paris appears in this book at least a dozen times and it's always spelled Pans. The story is good, typical of Morton but the typos every few pages make for a frustrating read. I've come to expect some errors in the ebooks but this one is the worst I've seen by a long shot!

Hilariously funny

I loved this novel, and found it to be hilariously funny. It's all about looking for a perfect man, when he's right underneath your nose. Although it was funny, it was a tad predictible. The type of romance novel in which you basically know what the climax will be and where. However, if you're looking for something humurous and juicy, I say, go for it.

Love this story, it's a very funny story, I laughed all the way to the end. The two main characters encounter was hilarious from the beginning and the same with their interaction to the end. Will definitely recommend this book

"The Islander was my first attempt at building a sailboat, but I don't suppose there ever was an amateur built craft that so nearly fulfilled the dream of her owner, or that a landsman ever came so near to weaving a magic carpet of the sea."
So begins this fascinating first-person narrative by a man who did what many dream of but few accomplish. Between 1921 and 1925 Harry Pidgeon circumnavigated the globe in a sailboat of his own construction, experienced many thrilling adventures in the far corners of the world, and relied mainly on his own strength, skill, and resourcefulness to survive.
After building his 34-foot yawl (at a cost of $1,000 for materials and a year and a half of hard work), the author sailed from California west across the Pacific to Hawaii in a test voyage. Then, from Los Angeles he cruised to lush and fabled islands — the Marquesas, Tahiti, Samoa, Fiji, New Hebrides, and New Guinea. With grace and economy, Mr. Pidgeon describes memorable encounters with native peoples (including suspected cannibals), tribal rites and rituals, the warm hospitality afforded him at many a remote harbor, good times with new friends and, of course, the delights of sailing. But there was danger and hardship as well, as he navigated his small craft through raging gales and giant seas, and a near-catastrophe when the Islander ran aground off the coast of South Africa.
Over 60 photographs enhance the text (Pidgeon was also an expert photographer) depicting the Islander under construction, under sail and at anchor in various locales; native peoples, houses, and ceremonies; penguins and other wildlife; pearl divers, a canoe race at Port Moresby; a tattooed girl of New Guinea; and many other vivid vignettes.
Well written, exciting, and true-to-life, Around the World Single-Handed: The Cruise of the "Islander" will delight armchair adventurers, sailing enthusiasts, or anyone who ever dreamed of hoisting sail and setting out for distant ports of call.

Interesting, quick read

While Harry Pidgeon's feat of sailing around the world is exceptional, and his writing style clear and concise, he offers few insights into sailing or his life. The book is fashioned after Joshua Slocum's "Sailing Alone Around The World:" Or equally as likely, Pidgeon and Slocum were two men of a like mind. In any event, both men portray that 19th century reserve so characteristic of the Englishmen. Such reserve in the face of near scrapes with death maybe admirable, but it does not make for as interesting reading.

Short but sweet!

Harry Pidgeon, a farm boy from Iowa did not even see the sea until he was eighteen but by then he had "mucked about" a bit in boats as do most lads and after a spell in Alaska, he decided to build one of the famous Rudder Magazines 'Islander' sloops. Having completed his thirty four foot wooden sailing boat, single-handed, without "too much trouble" he said, he launched and sailed it - single-handed - to Hawaii.

He accepted a crew for the return, who joined with a brand new guitar. He was, he said, going to learn how to play it, during his "spare time" on the voyage. Harry concluded that this crew-hand somewhat lacked experience of sailing a sloop across an ocean. "However, we got on well enough". Reading this book it is difficult to imagine anyone not being able to `get along; with the calm, competent harry Pigeon.

Joshua Slocomb had only completed the first single-handed some thirty years before in his famous sloop `Spray'who was just three feet longer that the "Islander", but Slocomb had more thirty years sea-going experience behind him. With boundless confidence and, perhaps wisely, single-handed again, harry decided to sail across the Pacific (and never was an Ocean more misnamed) to see `the islands' and, like Slocomb, "kinda, sorta" forgot to stop.

Written in a rather dry, straightforward and chronological manner Pidgeon's tale lacks that marvelous prose that the relatively unlettered Slocomb astoundingly produced in his account. But arm-chair sailors and old reminiscers like me will still enjoy reading these travels and the marvelous islands, peoples, trails and the ultimate success of Harry Pidgeon's circumnavigation around the world. And, unlike Josh Slocomb he did not get corrected by President Kruger who had insisted that Slocomb had misspoke - he meant, Kruger insisted, across the world - it was, after all, said the President of the South African Boer Nation, flat.

Harry would have agreed with Slocomb.

Around the world single minded

No fantastic adventure, no , no fight with aggressive natives: just a plain yet fascinating description of a great adventure. A very enterprising man decides to explore that (large) part of the globe he does not yet know: ninety years ago it was still possible.
Through his simple and rugged vessel the author can reach persons and human groups who often are minorities and sometimes disappearing.
I was touched from the attitude of this unassuming man, who likes to really get in touch with human beings so different from his neighbors; he is not an ambassador of western culture, but a curious man who want to explore clean waters and unspoiled lands as well as to communicate as far as possible with persons who have a different perspective of life.
I like this book a lot.

In this memoir, co-written by the noted naval historian Paul Stillwell, he describes his life from boyhood in Richmond, Virginia, through his enlisted service on a World War II submarine chaser, to later tours of duty at sea and ashore. Denied housing and even jailed for impersonating an officer, he recounts efforts to overcome both cultural and institutional obstacles of racism. In 2009, the Navy named a guided missile destroyer in his honor.

Vice Adm. Samuel L. Gravely, Jr., was commissioned in 1944, promoted to admiral in 1971, and retired from the Navy in 1980. He died in 2004.

A tour de force first-person account of the life of Samuel L. Gravely, Jr.

"Trailblazer, The U.S. Navy's First Black Admiral", is a tour de force first-person account of the life of Samuel L. Gravely, Jr. In his youth, he learned well the lessons of Jim Crow in his home-town of Richmond, Virginia. In spite of the various obstacles placed in his path by a narrow-minded society, he went on to become one of the first African Americans to be commissioned as an officer and, ultimately, as the very first African American officer to attain flag rank in the U.S. Navy.

Admiral Gravely tells his story with the help of Paul Stillwell, who is a Navy veteran, editor and author of "The Golden Thirteen: Recollections of the First Black Naval Officers." In the Trailblazer book, we see through Admiral Gravely's eyes and in his voice how he climbed the ladder in the Navy to become the first African American to command a ship, the first to command a fleet, and the first to become an admiral in 1971. His ground-breaking achievements were a tribute to his deeply ingrained strength of character, fiercely dedicated temperament, and dogged perseverance.

Trailblazer also details the personal legacy of Admiral Gravely, the husband and family man, as seen through the eyes of his devoted and loving wife, Alma, including their whirlwind courtship, which lead to their marriage in 1946 - a rich and full union that lasted 58 years - to the death of their beloved older son Robbie in 1978, and finally to Alma's making peace with the certainty of his impending death.

"Sammie," as Alma affectionately referred to the Admiral, very wisely drew from a diverse pool of experiences, as well as from leadership examples provided by his fellow officers, in modeling his own command style during his impressive naval service career. He became THE role model to emulate and set a fine example for thousands of African American naval officers who came after him.

Admiral Gravely poignantly describes one of the more distasteful aspects that made an excruciatingly painful and enduring impression on him during his first duty posting, after his graduation from midshipman school in December 1941. He had returned to Camp Robert Smalls, where he had started his naval service two years earlier, only to find that he was still living in a very clearly segregated world. The naval training station at Great Lakes had quarters for white officers, but not for him. The officer's club was open to white officers, but not to him. To add insult to injury, after he pulled daily watches encompassing the whole camp, he had to return to the distinctly separate "Black camp" each night to sleep. Gravely, regarding this blatant disparity in the service ranks (and society as a whole) as a formidable obstacle, noted, "This was one of the hardest things for me to take of anything that happened to me during my Navy career."

Admiral Gravely always relished and welcomed any and every opportunity for additional training, personal enrichment, and overall challenge of being a part of something new. Continuous educational growth formed the bulwark of his life's mantra. He never knew what he would encounter in the next stage of his life, but he knew for certain what he was leaving behind.
He just wanted to be "a regular sailor."

What comes next after you've conquered the world?

"On the three-hundredth anniversary of my birth, I finally managed to conquer the world."

So starts Perfect State, a clever little sci-fi story about reality, emperors, and dating. The main character, God-Emperor Kairominas, was surprisingly easy to relate to, even though, as of the quarter-century anniversary of my birth, I have yet to conquer anything. The other characters don't get much time to shine, but Shale and Bask made good use of their appearances and I liked both of them a great deal.

The story is fast paced and humorous, though the ending gets a little... serious. However, it is a really short story (about 71 Kindle pages). Calling it a "novella" feels misleading. To me, novella implies a short novel. Perfect States is really just a short story. I would have purchased it regardless, but would have preferred to know how short it was beforehand (NOTE: when I purchased the book and at the time I wrote the review, the page count for this story had not been posted).

The only Sanderson work I don't like

I feel bad giving this such a low rating as Sanderson is my favorite living fantasy author, but I really didn't like this one. The plot had an interesting premise but I found the interaction between Kairominas and Sophie cringeworthy, which is terrible because Brandon normally writes such great female characters. It took me out of the story and the resolution, which was unexpected, wasn't enough to redeem it for me. I found myself wandering what on earth the point was at the end.

Quick and enjoyable read

Great quick read. I'm not a fast reader and it took me a couple hours tops. Brandon Sanderson has an incredible talent for writing books that look effortless. The ideas and storyline in the beginning are complex but I knew it would come together the more I read and it did.

*Beginning of possible spoiler (it's scene setting not plot revealing)*. Its set in a Matrix-esq world (think brains in jars) and each brain (Person) gets their own stimulated world (everyone else in that world is a program with a concept) built around them. The Person that the world is built around can interact with other real People in Border States but our Main Character doesn't do that much. Also, the real person is told that they are in a stimulation when they reach age 50 by what is known as the Wode.

The premise is intriguing and fun and the story takes us on an adventure where the main character is pushed to do some self discovery. I definitely recommend this and any book by Brandon Sanderson. He always leaves me wanting more. I am ready for the next installment of Perfect State!! If you are familiar with Sanderson's other work it has the same flow as the two Legion books. It is a very short read and it is absolutely incredible what Brandon Sanderson accomplished in so few pages. If I had a book club I would love to go over this book with them. I have questions!! Any book that leaves me thinking about the plot long after I read it is something to be cherished. Keep on writing Mr. Sanderson! Oh and for any parents out there - it does touch upon sex. Read first so you can decide if you want to pass it along.
