Candid, touching and heartwarming

A touching, heart warming, remarkably frank (and sometimes heartbreaking) but also inspirational life and love story.
Cynda takes you through her journey with candor and humour and you find yourself immersed in her and Michael's immediately.
You truly feel her struggle, her challenge, and her love throughout. Once you put it down you will realize that love conquers even in death.
Cynda also shows us that when memories are made with ones we love their memory becomes our treasure ... and for that we are rich.

Being a lover of words, I have read many books that evoke feelings, empathy, compassion, and resonance, via its narrative. But a story told through retelling, by recreating words, emotions, and imageries, cannot capture the true, raw and powerful sentiments that the original dialogues, notes, and prose, that were once the actual words of the people in the story. By documenting their love story as a series of original emails, letters, notes and pictures, Cynda and Michael are allowing you an unvarnished view into their love story and letting their own literal words that they have said to each other, be the vehicle for you to decipher just how unique and unselfish this love story is. This "unedited" way of writing is unique and powerful, because it allows the reader to determine, and feel for themselves just how powerful this love story is, without being told to feel one way or another. It is almost as if Cynda knew that the original words were enough to evoke in her reader the power of their love for one another and how her grief was overcome by hope and a sense of continuity. Thank you Cynda and Michael for allowing us into your immensely personal lives and making us feel hopeful, enamored, and thankful for what is in our lives.

This is a copy of a post by Jocelan Tracey on my timeline on the Facebook page For Michael, Love Cynda on February 22, 2016.

I read this book in one sitting. It was liking finding someone's diary and knowing that I shouldn't be reading it but unable to stop myself. Cynda is one of my dearest friends. She went missing from my life after meeting Michael and this tribute to him has finally told me how the story unfolded. The book is very emotional which sometimes gets away from her but it is clear from the outset that this was a special meeting of two souls who each needed what the other had to give. There are few people in our lives like Cynda who has boundless optimism and a genuine love of life. Her ability to stay with someone and see him to the end of his life with no fear for her own survival only testifies to her capacity for caring and that I am beyond lucky to have a friend like her in my life. I very much doubt I could have done what she did for Michael but it was a two way street and what she gained from the experience is clearly told on every page. Its a jaw dropping tale of love without boundaries. A whole box of kleenex is required.

About the Author
Norma Broude and Mary D. Garrard are professors of art history at the American University in Washington, D.C., and are leading scholars in the field of feminist art history. Broude is the author of The Macchiaioli: Italian Painters of the Nineteenth Century (1987), Impressionism, A Feminist Reading: The Gendering of Art, Science, and Nature in the Nineteenth Century (1991), and Georges Seurat (1992). Garrard has written articles and reviews on feminism and art history, Jacopo Sansovino, Michelangelo and Raphael, and Renaissance sculpture. She is the author of Artemisia Gentileschi: The Image of the Female Hero in Italian Baroque Art (1989) and, with Broude, the coeditor of Feminism and Art History: Questioning the Litany (1982).

The essential overview of feminist art history

This is essential reading for anyone interested in feminist art history. It was one of the earlier scholarly compliations of critical articles concerning issues in visual representation of women as subject and by women as artists. Ranging from a study of images of women in Greek art, to an analysis of the psycho-social motivations of 20th century Expressionism, to an investigation of American quilting and its influence on contemporary art, each essay contributes to our understanding of paradigms which are basic in forming a new context-- a context which is needed to re-examine the white, Western male canon of standard art histories. The essays also provide a fundamental vocabulary for investigation of specific works, and aptly balance the feminist positions about art with vital, challenging interpretations of cultural conditions and biases which have affected our perception of gender and the place of art in societies over time. The introduction by the editors defines the content, nuance and strategy of the feminist art historical project and is as pertinent today as it was twenty years ago. I would recommend this book as a useful starting point for research and education; and for students, teachers or anyone willing to cast off the blinders of assumed histories.

The most comprehensive, objective text I have ever read on feminism within an art-historical and contemporary context PERIOD. This is the best primer (thus published) you could possibly read for a gender studies or women's art history course and you will consult it repeatedly when writing for your own work, even if your area of focus only peripherally discusses these topics. A solid critical examination of the changing roles, tropes, ideological placeholders, and various identities (or lack thereof) women are and have been throughout the discourse of art.

Having received his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley, Manuel Velasquez now serves as the Charles Dirksen Professor of Business Ethics at Santa Clara University. He teaches courses in the Leavey School of Business in the Legal, Political, and Social Environment of the Firm, in Business Strategy, and in Business Ethics. An excellent introductory philosophy text and a great read!

As a college student and amateur philosopher I have had a chance to read several philosophy texts. I found that a good number of these philosphy texts were primarily interested in the facts concerning the historical timeline of philosphy (when Socrates was born etc. etc.). Velasquez's Philosophy A Text with Readings focuses on the ideas of the great historical philosphers and challenges the reader to think for her or himself. It is one of the few textbooks which I have thoroughly enjoyed reading. I would read it even if I was not require to!

Bias toward analytic philosophy

While this text is serviceable for introduction to philosophy classes, I haven't used it in the sections I teach. The reason is one all to common in current philosophy textbooks: the editorial slant is decidedly toward contemporary analytic philosophy. While this philosophical movement is certainly significant, those of us in the more traditional, realist tradition find the academic imperialism of analytic philosophy a bit troublesome. This has affected this particular text's treatment of Aquinas and natural law, for example. The study questions devoted to this section demonstrate a rather dismissive and superficial understanding of the related issues. Having graduated at the B.A. level from the institution where the author teaches, I am familiar with the institutional bias on campus toward ideological "multiculturalism," and other contemporary PC "isms." During my own doctoral studies in philosophy, I shed such trendy scholarly prejudices. Classical realism is, and always has been, what I find to be the most substantial approach to the discipline. Unfortunately, those swimming with the tide of scholarly fashion, like Velasquez, attract the majority of those teaching in the field today. In fairness, the book does have many strengths. The ample primary texts included are a definite plus. The slick illustrations and study aids should help attract the limited attention spans of today's students. But the overall editorial stance is one dimensional, and does not reflect any interest in academic "inclusiveness" or "tolerance" regarding other approaches to philosophical texts--other than that of the analytic school. The best policy, in any case, is to focus on a few complete primary texts rather than employing the shot-gun blizzard of scattered readings typical of an introductory text.

Highly Engaging

Of all the books on philosophy which I have purchased over the years (and have dispaired over), "Philosopy: A Text With Readings" is the only one that manages to be deeply engaging and rewarding, as well as comprehensive and capable of truly elucidating me on this expansive and illusive subject. The writing style is gentle, fluid, and personal. Manuel Valesquez writes in a way that is responsive to the modern sensibility of inclusiveness and respect. Because this book is so enjoyable it makes learning a pleasure instead of a chore. I recommend it enthusiastically!

Mediocre atlas. I've seen much better.

I hate to say it, but unfortunately I was very unimpressed with this book. One good feature is the informative and concise descriptions of all the pathologies. These are useful.

However, the printing quality is very poor & the image quality is also bad especially for radiographs. It is really too bad that the pictures are so poor. I wouldn't recommend buying this book. I also own the Lexi Comp hard and soft tissue atlases and find them to be much more useful.

This is the only text I use for path anymore. Keep the others around for reference, but this is your main source. Lots of good prescriptions in the back. Great organization. Cuts out alot of the padding found in other texts. Don't be fooled by the slim profile, its jam packed with good and USEFUL info.

This atlas provides clear color photos highlighting the classic presentations of pathological lesions in and around the oral cavity. The text descriptions are a bit brief in some cases, but references are provided for further reading. I find it to be an excellent review and reference.

Robert Crick, Th.D., has passionately served as the Director of the Church of God Chaplains Commission and as a professor for the Pentecostal Theological Seminary (Cleveland, TN) for more than 30 years. During his service as an army chaplain, he was awarded the Legion of Merit and Bronze Star for Valor. While working as a Clinical Pastoral Education Supervisor, he developed an international chaplaincy ministry that has expanded to more than 3,000 trained and endorsed chaplains, serving in 73 different countries.

A wealth of knowledge on ministering to military, tothose in "our" communities, and becoming part of the cure instead of part of the cause. I have been acquainted with Dr Cricks work in the Military, Ministry and the Chapaincy for over 35 years, he practices what he preachs. Every young pastor who is looking for ways to reach outside the walls of his church, should study this essay of life much as they would study the life of Paul on his missionary journeys. Robert Crick is not one to stand in the limelight and stand himself out above others in his life or writtings, but what your do and what you believe will be evidence in itself. Read this book and know the truth of evangelistic work.

Burnaby's 1694 Translation

This is the original English translation done by William Burnaby not long after the original Latin manuscripts were found in 1663. The translator was only 21 at the time. It is written in the style and spelling of the time, so is not totally accessible to a modern audience. Since this is a somewhat racy work, I also found that the sections that were considered pornographic were left in the original Latin. As you read through this work, you will come upon entire sentences, paragraphs, or even pages that are in Latin. Since I don't read Latin, I wasn't able to understand these sections; but since the pornographic parts don't interest me, I wasn't too offended. This is an interesting method of 17th century censorship. If you want the whole thing in English, you will need to read translations from the 1960's or newer.

There were many racy parts left in, but the translator did his best to make them acceptable. Given the strong homosexual theme, it was still considered very controversial.

It should also be noted that the original Latin is very fragmentary, and this as well as other translations have been filled with interpolations by others. I understand that the original manuscript left to itself would be too incomplete to make for a coherent story.

To me this work is interesting from a historical perspective; it shows that bawdy humor has always existed and probably always will. The supposed author, Petronius, lived during the time of Nero and was the ultimate party animal. He was an intimate friend of Nero. This book reflects that lifestyle and shows the decadence of the age.

This is not a book I am interested in reading again, even in a more modern translation, but now I can say that I have read it. There are no morals taught or great insights into the human soul; it is just a raunchy tale. If you do want to read this book, I would recommend a more modern translation.

The Satyricon of Petronius Arbiter

In the translation by Oscar Wilde. Supposedly. I first read it online in translation by Alfred R. Allinson published by Panurge Press in 1930.
At one point I was very much into reading the biographies of Oscar Wilde and recalled that he had boasted of reading Petronius in the original Latin but no word of a translation. So when I found a translation attributed to him I had to buy it. No publisher was listed as the volume had been privately published for subscribers only.
One verse in Allision's translation I noticed was identical to the same in Wilde's and as the Wilde version was also published in 1930 I smelled a rat. Here is the verse in question:

"Who had a pathic lust ,
With Delian vice accursed;
Who loves the pliant thigh,
Quick hand an wanton sigh;
Come hither, come hither, come hiether.
Here shall he see
Gross beasts as he,
Lecher's of every feather!:

Obviously no coincidence. Was Allinson just playing a joke or was he skittish in putting his name on such a seriously perverse book?

The novel (it is called the first novel) is wicked fun--but not for prudes as the above verse displays! Petronius uses the narrative of a Greek and his slave boy during a quest for sexual adventure to carry along his lengthy observations of Roman life of the times.

About the Author

Douglas Scarrett is now retired from his last post as Director of Estate Management at De Montfort University where he was previously Deputy Head of the School of Land and Building Studies. He was joint founding editor of the Journal of Property Management and has been an external tutor for the College of Estate Management for the past 25 years.

Sylvia Osborn�is Dean of Postgraduate Studies at The College of Estate Management and has worked as a chartered surveyor in two London practices, specialising in valuation and property management. She has worked in higher education for many years, teaching on RICS accredited degree programmes and on leisure property degrees.

Stopped Arguing Pointlessly

Stop Arguing. Now. How to Stop Arguing: Dealing with Stress, Anger, Rejection, Conflict, Fighting and Difficult People by Amber Rain is a great tool to help those in a bad situation. Also as it states in the disclaimer: you should adjust your use of the information and recommendations provided accordingly considering that no two situations are exactly alike. Also, I like the formatting of this book. Instead of chapters and long sections or paragraphs and prose, there is simply a list of tips. Though long, the list is quite effective. I am glad that this focuses on you as opposed to your argument partner. The tips can be used in practically every situation and during my reading I can recognize things I have done. The best tip of all is number forty nine in my opinion, just do not skip ahead to read it; all of the tips are really good.

This Kindle Book Has Helped Me Quit Arguing So Much

Easy to follow advice on how to quit fighting and arguing. These tips are really very good. I think the one that has helped me the most is the suggestion to make up my mind that no matter what, I am not going to argue. Before reading this Kindle book I didn't really understand how to have more self control. This book has provided specific direction on how I can quit arguing altogether. Although, I have still been fighting, I am not fighting as much as I was before reading this Kindle book. This means that I have made some progress, which the author says is a good thing. Amber says that change takes time and that I am not always going to do everything perfectly. I have learned how to forgive myself quickly when I do slip and argue. I have also been starting over with new beginnings through letting go of past events.

Making Science Fun!

This is creative, innovative, and a fun way to mix the truths of science with the relevance of relationships, making the lesson of electrons one that will be remembered! Kids have a hard time understanding how science and math fit into everyday life. Telling stories not only helps with the understanding of the concept, but helps with retention, too. Well done, Ginna and Paige, and hope this is just the beginning of creative book writing for the both of you!

Not for kids

Anyone who already understands the technical terms used in this e-book will probably already understand ionization. In spite of the juvenile drawings, it is not for kids. Read the summary on the Amazon page and you have covered most of the "plot." I applaud these high school juniors for their effort and they may have gotten a good grade on the project but it's not worth even $2.99. I'm sorry I bought it.

Adorable Book

This book is an adorable book for young people who are trying to grasp the beginning concepts of electrons and atoms. Science teachers could use it as a tool to make this topic easier to understand. I also like the underlying message of how important it is for the young to be accepted as part of a group. Great job ladies!
