Insights From Insects: What Bad Bugs Can Teach Us, by Gilbert Waldbauer

This fascinating, beautifully illustrated book profiles twenty "troublesome bugs," showing how the study of these creatures has led scientists to many basic discoveries that have enhanced our understanding of life.

The reader learns how an American entomologist was awarded France’s gold medal of honor for rescuing the French wine industry from destruction by the aphid-like "grape phylloxera"; how the World Health Organization almost completely eradicated malaria through the use of DDT before the insect adapted to the insecticide and became resistant; how some insects disguise themselves to avoid detection; how others survive the subzero temperatures of winter; why some flies have a uterus and a mammary gland; and many more strange and tantalizing true tales about these wonderful, troublesome "pests"—pests that have taught us vital lessons about survival, nature, and the environment.

From Publishers Weekly
The pop-biology premise that all of nature is a source of edification and delight has its limits tested in this engrossing - and quite gross - collection of essays on insect pests. Entomologist Waldbauer (What Good Are Bugs?) profiles a rogue's gallery of unhealthful, unprofitable and unsavory creatures from the mosquito and house fly to an array of agricultural scourges. From their ingenious strategies for wreaking havoc and evading retribution from predators, toxic plant chemicals, insecticides and eradication programs, he gleans lessons about the Darwinian struggle for survival and the complex, easily upset balance of ecosystems. Waldbauer's lucid, engaging style, informed by accessible discussions of his and other scientists' research, maintains a lab-coated tone of interested objectivity. Still, there's a fine line between the wonder of life and the horror of life, and it's pretty much erased when Waldbauer writes of New England towns buried by gypsy moth caterpillars, reviews case studies of humans infested with flesh-eating screwworm maggots, or ticks off the list of insect parts the government tolerates in processed foods (tomato sauces can contain "thirty fly eggs, fifteen fly eggs and one maggot, or two maggots"). Readers may therefore find his lessons on how pests are eradicated - by siccing ladybug predators on them, stamping out their fertility with swarms of radiation-sterilized males or simply torching them with flame throwers - grimly satisfying indeed. From Booklist
Humans and insects often want the same things at the same time. We think of insects as pests, but whether an insect is being a pest or not depends on the place, the season, and the circumstances. As entomologist Waldbauer (What Good Are Bugs? 2003) points out, less than 2 percent of the 900,000 known insects are pests, and yet the fight to control these pest species has taught scientists much about insect genetics, behavior, and physiology. In this highly accessible account, the author profiles 20 "bad bugs," all of which reveal basic tenets of biology, including the mosquito, the fruit fly, and the aphid. And black swallowtail butterflies are masters of disguise, resembling bird droppings as caterpillars and mimicking poisonous pipevine swallowtail butterflies as adults. Also, the French wine industry was saved--after the accidental introduction of an American aphidlike grape pest almost wiped out the grape plants--when the French vines were grafted onto American rootstocks, as the American plants had evolved resistance to the pest. These are mere samples from an often-mesmerizing introduction to both insects and biological principles that will be sought out by science-minded readers. Nancy Bent

Lessons from the Real Owners of the Planet!
By David B Richman
Gilbert Waldbauer has written several entertaining and informative books on insects, but "Insights from Insects: What Bad Bugs Can Teach Us" may well be his best, both from the importance of the subject and because of the clarity with which he expounds it. Insects have always fascinated me and Waldbauer explains why we all should at least pay attention to these real owners (along with worms, microorganisms and plants) of planet earth.

Starting with the most dangerous insects on earth- mosquitoes (malaria kills about a million people a year worldwide and is now re-invading the United States, and it is just one of the diseases that mosquitoes vector) - and going on through the house fly, the "fruit fly" (used in laboratory genetics studies), aphids, the tsetse fly, the bagworm, the black swallowtail (a pest of carrots and relatives), the cabbage white, the corn earworm, the gypsy moth, the grape phylloxera, and several others, ending with the screwworm fly, Waldbauer explains the trials and successes of human attempts to tame "bad bugs." From the failures and environmental disasters of DDT and other chlorinated hydrocarbons to the success of sterile male release for screwworm and the successes and failures of biocontrol, scientists have learned a great deal about the insect world, natural selection, genetics and protecting our crops and our health and the health of our domestic animals. Waldbauer covers each of his subjects in an entertaining and informative way, leaving you with the satisfaction of knowing an amazing amount about each of the insects discussed.

If you only have time for one book on economic insects, this would be it. I recommend it without reservation!

The Simple Beauty of the Unexpected: A Natural Philosopher's Quest for Trout and the Meaning of Everything, by Marcelo Gleiser

Marcelo Gleiser has had a passion for science and fishing since he was a boy growing up on the beaches of Rio de Janeiro. Now a world-famous theoretical physicist with hundreds of scientific articles and several books of popular science to his credit, he felt it was time to connect with nature in less theoretical ways. After seeing a fly-fishing class on the Dartmouth College green, he decided to learn to fly-fish, a hobby, he says, that teaches humility. In The Simple Beauty of the Unexpected, Gleiser travels the world to scientific conferences, fishing wherever he goes. At each stop, he ponders how in the myriad ways physics informs the act of fishing; how, in its turn, fishing serves as a lens into nature’s inner workings; and how science engages with questions of meaning and spirituality, inspiring a sense of mystery and awe of the not yet known. Personal and engaging, The Simple Beauty of the Unexpected is a scientist’s tribute to nature, an affirmation of humanity’s deep connection with and debt to Earth, and an exploration of the meaning of existence, from atom to trout to cosmos.

Review
"Beautifully composed . . . This elegant treatise will inspire readers who relish a philosophical approach to science and travel." —Library Journal

“Altogether excellent.” —Brain Pickings

Review
“The fly-fishing is naively beautiful. The physics is just beautiful. But the conclusion to the journey of a man so engaged by both―the epiphany―is magnificent and should be shared by us all.” (Jeremy Lucas, European Open fly-fishing champion, author of Presentation Fly-Fishing and The Last Salmon)

“The Simple Beauty of the Unexpected is an elegantly written, introspective, and thought-provoking meditation on growing up as someone curious about the universe. It’s a wonderful introduction to the human side of science and the scientific side of being human.” (Sean Carroll, author of The Big Picture: On the Origins of Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself)

“Whether teasing apart the known, the unknown, and the unknowable in science, or immersing us inthe natural world of Brazil or Iceland, Marcelo Gleiser’s words sing on the page. You don’t have to fish or seek out spiritual experiences to love this book (I do neither). I was absolutely delighted with Marcelo’s joy in nature, with his reasons for not eating meat, and with the wonderful surprise for all animal lovers at the end of this compelling and highly personal narrative.” (Barbara King, author of How Animals Grieve)

“With wit, charm, humor, and passion, Gleiser pulls off that rarest of catches―connecting the most fundamental and sublime aspects of science with the most intimate and ordinary experience of fishing. From a river in Iceland to the Large Hadron Collider near Geneva, Gleiser seamlessly pulls together disparate themes of life and questions of meaning.Full of warmth and deep insight, The Simple Beauty of the Unexpected is a meditation on human significance in a vast Universe that is full of both fish and stars.” (Adam Frank, professor of astrophysics, University of Rochester, and NPR commentator)

Science, fly fishing and autobiography in an engaging potpourri.
By Winston A. Ostrow
This is an eloquent exploration of the human situation from the perspective of an eminent scientist turned fly fisher. It illustrates the old saying that new fishermen start out wanting to catch the most fish, then the biggest fish, and finally are satisfied to just see the River. (He discusses the gendered reference in "fisherman," finding it acceptable on esthetic grounds.) Professor Gleiser carries the last stage of the fisherman a bit further, suggesting that the enlightened abandon fishing altogether. Only time will tell whether that ultimately satisfies him. I suspect not, although he offers an ethical rationale for his position. His final position seems unrealistic to me in that only a fisheries biologist is likely to master the intricacies of trout habitat and life, absent the incentive of actually fishing for them. It also seems he had an in-born (dare I say it?) propensity that makes vegetarianism attractive as an ethical position. However, he also displays a predatory propensity to fish, so we'll see which propensity ultimately wins out. I hope he writes on the subject again, maybe 10 or 15 years down the road. Although he rejects the compromise that catch-and-release fishing offers, in so doing he gives short shrift to his predatory side. I suspect somewhat the same impulse underlies scientific inquiry, so perhaps his science gives him a different outlet. But, can the impulse be fully subliminated? The book is as much about his scientific world view as about fishing. That genre is also familiar, although this example is skewed toward physics rather than biology, giving it a different twist from the usual one. I like physics, so I enjoyed that. The discussion is general. It assumes some previous exposure to the subject at a lay person's level. Someone lacking a rudimentary exposure to quantum physics in particular might find that discussion a little challenging. But, that's only a tiny part of the book. The personal, biographic details are interesting, especially regarding his youth in Brazil, and also illuminating as to Dr. Gleisser's world view, which is less deterministic and more skeptical about science itself than typical in a scientist. He cites a wonderful, personal experience as the basis for this. Despite my quibble with the conclusion, I enjoyed the book. It is very well written. It makes you think. Fly fisherpersons with a taste for science will enjoy it. Those uninitiated in fly fishing who like science will also enjoy it as the fishing portions of the book are not technical.

Theoretical physics, flyfishing for trout and autobiography blend. Self discovery and discovery in science.
By lyndonbrecht
This book has three intermixed themes--theoretical physics, fly fishing and autobiography. Gleiser was born in Brazil, has a PhD from a British university and has been a professor at an American Ivy League school for more than twenty years. He writes: "In my life--and in this book--the fishing is mostly a conduit to the outer world of natural phenomena and the inner world of the self."

As an adult he acquires an interest in fly fishing (trout). This is difficult to describe if you have not read the book, but it echoes a boyhood interest in fishing. The chapters are built around places he goes to give talks but also to fish--England (Lake District), Italy (Tuscany), Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul) and Iceland (Laxe River). Each of these places is different and yet the same, the relationship of fisher and fish, two different worlds of air and water interconnected. He becomes more expert and more appreciative, with fly fishing mentors coming into the mix.

He also mentions briefly his sport of obstacle running and Spartan racing (I had to look these up--sounds more like Marine training that a sport!).

Each chapter is also about an aspect of physics that he was invited to speak about at a conference. These cover a very wide range of physics, from some history of physics, the Big Bang, particles , string theory, origins of life and the prospect of life elsewhere in the universe. He describes science as good at the How and When questions but not useful in the Why question. We have one planet to support us and we're not going to solve things by leaving the mess behind us and rocketing across the cosmos for new planets.

Along the way, he discusses personal loss, climate change, and varieties of agnosticism. In the last section, the Iceland chapter, he has a sort of epiphany about fly fishing. I won't describe it here because it's an important point the book builds to and in a sense it would be like giving away the ending in a mystery novel. I don't want to take away some of the surprise a reader might have.

Same as old edition; still great
By Vince Kotchian
This "second edition" is exactly the same as the first edition. If you're looking for new GRE questions, there's nothing to see here... move along.

So Vince, why'd you give it five stars?

Even though there are no new questions from the previous edition, it's still a great book since the questions are written by ETS. They have the same complexities and nuances as those on the real test. They play by the same rules. As a GRE tutor, I've seen just how important this is from working with hundreds of students over the past 9 years.

Therefore, this book (or the identical previous edition) is well worth getting to get used to the real test. Make mastering these questions more of a priority than practicing with questions written by a third-party (like Kaplan or the Princeton Review). Third-party questions DON'T behave like verbal questions on the real test. They're often too simple, inconsistent, and just not very GRE-like.

The Bottom Line

This book is an important part of any serious student's GRE prep... for its authenticity.

Second Verse, Same as the First.
By Brian R. McElroy
The 2nd edition of this book is exactly the same as the 1st edition, other than the fact that it says "Second Edition" on the front, and currently costs a little bit less than the 1st edition: Official GRE Verbal Reasoning Practice Questions

To save money by buying all 3 official guides at once, try the GRE Super Power Pack Official GRE Super Power Pack. The 1st edition of the Super Power Pack will work just fine, since the 2nd editions are almost exactly the same as the 1st editions (only minor changes were made to the main Official Guide): The Official Guide to the GRE General Test, Third Edition

About me: I'm a Harvard grad, 99% GRE scorer and full-time private tutor since 2002. For my personal GRE Prep recommendations, google "GRE Action Plan."

Sir Robert Peel: The Life and Legacy (Library of Victorian Studies), by Richard A. Gaunt

Sir Robert Peel - paragon or pariah? Peel was the greatest political leader in mid-Victorian Britain and a titan of Conservative politics. He held the greatest offices of state over a political career spanning forty years and was twice Prime Minister. He was a tireless reformer who put ""nation"" before ""party"" with a range of modernizing measures including giving political rights to Catholics, reform of banking, the railways, the criminal law and prisons, as well as founding the Metropolitan Police. He introduced ""free-trade"" budgets and repealed the Corn Laws to give cheap food to Britain's growing industrial and urban population. He was the first acknowledged leader of the Conservative Party and the Founder of Modern Conservatism. Yet Peel's seemingly peerless reputation has never been secure. Abolition of the Corn Laws split his party, his ""Peelite"" supporters joined the Liberals and the Conservatives remained in opposition for thirty years.

Richard Gaunt, drawing on a huge archive of state papers, contemporary writings -- including Peel's own memoirs -- and the latest historiography, paints a convincing picture of Peel as a exponent of effective government in the modern industrial state, of a calculating practitioner, supremely self-confident, who dominated both his Party and the House of Commons. And even Conservative ""backwoodsmen"" were moving towards Peel's new model Conservatism. Gaunt's thoughtful, revisionist study is essential for all students of Peel and mid-Victorian politics.
