Everyone should see this place!

Noted conservationist Sigurd F. Olson wrote this collection of essays about his years canoeing, snowshoeing, skiing and fishing the Wilderness areas of Superior National Forest and the Quetico of Canada.

The essays are organized according to the four seasons. Olson has an almost metaphysical relationship with the animals that live in the wilderness: red squirrels, loons, otters, even field mice are fellow travelers.

Olson canoes and portages scores of miles to listen to the loons sing on Lac La Croix. He searches hundreds of lakes, looking for the perfect wilderness area, unspoiled by civilization. And he finds it! Saganaga, "a symbol of the primitive, perfect and untouched." Later, he hears that a road has come to Saganaga and he ventures back to see what's been done to it. It seems the same until he rounds a bend and is confronted with a modern lodge. He's conflicted; he wants human companionship but he doesn't want to lose his "singing wilderness."

In another essay, he tells of "flying in" to one of the lakes, rather than spending days canoeing and portaging to get there. He feels disoriented and can't really appreciate the experience. He hasn't put in enough effort; he doesn't deserve it. And he never does this again.

Olson is a sentimental, nostalgic man. He tells of catching trout for his grandmother, whom he credits with instilling a love of nature. While fishing on the Manitou, he is confronted with an eighty-year-old trout fisherman who's come to his favorite fishing spot for one last time.

Olson also limns essays that show the brutality of nature. In "The Storm" we see white-throated sparrows, Killdeers, purple finches, chickadees, and robins returning to the wilderness area after a long and brutal winter. Olson is marveling at their music until snow begins the fall and the temperature plummets. Thousands of confused birds freeze to death.

Admittedly, there is some clunky writing in the SINGING WILDERNESS; one gets the impression that Olson is writing from memory in a lot of instances. Also, at times he doesn't tell you where he is: he refers to the "lake" as if we should know which one of the thousands in the Superior/Quetico wilderness he's referring to. There's also a dearth of people. Often, he refers to "we" but the person or persons he's with are invisible.

That said, I think everyone would benefit from reading these essays. I couldn't help but wonder how many people know this place exists. These days the area is called the Boundary Water Canoe Area Wilderness. No motor boats allowed; no ATVs allowed! Everyone should see it at least once in his/her lifetime.

Who would have thought

Originally published in 1956, this classic still speaks to nature lovers today, and it deserves to share the same shelf with Thoreau, Muir, and Beston. Olson's essays convey the spirit and sense of place in what is now known as the Boundary Waters Canoe Area -- Superior National Forest in Minnesota and Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario. North country life is special, and Olson obviously loved living there. He writes with delight of seeing Northern Lights, portaging canoes, cross country skiing, hearing the echoes of loons calling, and witnessing the occasional mouse tobogganing off a tent roof. Though the chapters are organized by seasons and begin with Spring, it is the essence of cold and snow and winter that carries the reader through the book. Best to be read by a warm fireplace with a light snow falling outside and a mug of hot chocolate nearby.

Excellent Resource for Writers

If you've ever visited Bryn's website, you might already be familiar with some of her lists for writers. I love lists in general (proud Type-A), but she does more than just jot down quick lists. The lists in this book are detailed and categorized to create a fantastic reference book for writers. Sure, you could grab a thesaurus to try and find a better verb and spend hours flipping through it because none of them quite fit, or you could go right to this book and search by the emotion or action your character needs to convey.

In addition to word lists, the book has an extensive section on names - first AND last that includes their origins. No need to google the latest list of baby names when you can just open this book and find the perfect character names to fit into the time period of your book.

One of my favorite parts about the book are the plot lists. There are pages and pages of suggestions for action plots, romance plots, family plots, workplace plots. Every writer knows the only way to get better at writing is to write as often as possible. Grab this book, flip it open to one of the plot lists and use it for prompts. Or use the word lists as a jumping off point.

Another great thing about this book is reading the lists made me think of things I could add to them. If you ever feel like you're stuck, just read through one of the sections and it'll get your mind spinning with possibilities. I recommend this book for all writers. You'll be happy to have it close at hand.

Being a writer I was very excited when I found out about this book. Often, your brain needs a little help with expressing certain ideas or feelings. The book didn't disappoint. Extremely thorough and in the whole well organized. I have already used it while writing and I am certain it will hold a special place in my writing toolbox.

Bryn's collection of Master Lists is a fabulous heuristic tool. No more wracking your brain for the right turn of phrase -- Bryn has sorted and compiled everything from descriptive phrases, to plot summaries, to character traits and names... Writer's block? Just run your eye down one of Bryn's lists to discover a new jumping off point.

Of course, no book is going to do the work for you -- a writer has to write. But this resource is wonderful for helping the writer easily sift through word choices, compare connotations, or find new direction. Many thanks, Bryn, for putting these lists together! I know they will be consulted over and over.

Book 1 of an unforgettable series to come

Demon Bane is a sci-fi fantasy adventure where you follow Mira Jacobs, a phoenix, as she attempts to hunt down a demon known as, The Thresher. The first time I read through the book, I had a few minor issues with it which, for the most part, were edited out in the revised edition that Jeff Sproul has posted now. Being as this book is a part of a series, there were some questions left unanswered by the end of the book which leaves you eagerly anticipating the next. However, this book also works well as a stand-alone read, having given much thought and explanation to the universe and the characters within it. Sproul’s development of the characters personalities throughout leaves you attached to them, no matter how brief your encounter is with them, which is a very powerful skill he takes full advantage of.
Although there are some pacing issues in the beginning of the story, if you can push through those you will have yourself an unforgettable universe to enjoy. The only issue that I had with the story itself is that Mira is awful at her job. The beginning of the book was a bit of a drag through as Sproul introduced his universe. Being placed immediately into the action, you would think that you will be getting a fast paced introduction. However, the whole beginning chapters slow down the pace as Mira is forced to backtrack, establishing my main issue, which would momentarily take me out of the universe in frustration; Mira sucks at her job. To an extent, it is understandable seeing her situation, but there were definitely parts where I was screaming at the text angrily wanting to shake Mira and tell her not to do this, or not to trust them so easily, etc. Not enough of an issue, by any means, to warrant less than a 5 star recommendation of the book and eagerly encourage anyone to pick it up. Demon Bane and the Sinphoria universe has me drawn in and I can’t wait to see what Sproul does with it next!

Combination of space opera and magical inspirations

Almost a new genre of fiction, combining traditional space opera with magic. This seems to be part of a series, but readable as a stand-alone novel. Very creative

GOZO SHIODA (1915-1994) studied with Morihei Ueshiba, the founder of modern Aikido, and was his foremost student. He held the ninth-rank black belt and founded the Yoshinkan school, where he was the chief instructor. He was also the chief instructor for the Tokyo Metropolitan Police, the Air Self-Defense Force, the Japanese National Railways and several universities. His son, YASUHISA SHIODA, succeeded his father.

Great Reference Material for Aikido Students/Instructors

If you have to buy one book on Yoshinkan Aikido, I would recommend Total Aikido by Gozo Shioda (same author). Total Aikido goes into much greater detail on basic stance, basic movements, breakfalls, history, self defense application, and principals of Yoshinkan Aikido. However, this book is a great compliment to Total Aikido, primarily focusing on application of more than 100 basic techniques, mostly demonstrated in the photos by the founder, Gozo Shioda, himself. This is a great reference source for any Yoshinkan practitioner. The book also briefly covers kamae, kihon dosa (alone and with a partner), ukemi, shikko-ho, and a few other basic principles. This book cannot replace the experience from training under a qualified instructor, but is a valuable tool for the student who wants to refresh and review what he/she has learned. Aikido, The Complete Basic Techniques is also a great tool for instructors who wish to review details of the techniques performed by the founder, and resolve any debates on application of basic techniques.

I just started Aikido practice and this was the book that my instructor recomended. It has all the basic techniques and is easy to follow and understand. Great book to have if you are interested in an amazing world of Aikido. Recommend

A sympathetic and inspired translation

It is good to see this book back in print. Though less bulky (228 pages) than the Wilhelm Yi-Ching translation, Blofeld's text has merits of its own, not least the fact that it is primarily intended as a guide to divination. To say the least, this is something the Wilhelm edition never was that clear about, the chaotic presentation of the number symbolism/tables etc. There was the strange division of the text (in fact a 'doubled' text), and much that appears in the middle section (the 'Tso Chuan' etc.) would have placed the whole text in better context, if it had been discussed at the beginning. Of course, everyone is indebted to Wilhelm. Nobody who likes the Yi Ching is going to ignore his valued contribution. However, for reasons outlined above, Blofeld expressed certain misgivings about the Wilhelm text, feeling that it did not make certain things clear - when it comes to the divination process, also questioning the readings of certain line texts.
Some of the (site) files list Blofeld as a mere editor, but he has presented us with a fresh translation of the main text. His translation was vetted by a number of Chinese scholars, well versed in the peculiar idioms, imagery and line symbolism of the Yi Ching. Moreover, Blofeld's translation is supported by a bril-liant introduction - outlining the background philosophy behind the Yi-Ching, and the way in which a wise Chinese scholar-sage would go about using it. Blofeld lived in pre-Communist China for many years, having 'run away' from England after graduating from Cambridge - effectively 'going native' - something few 'white men' of good social standing did, in his day and age. He knew his Chinese language from living in the country (he married into a Chinese family), and made frequent visits to Taoist (and Buddhist) temples in remote parts of China. His travels even took him to Tibet. For all his merits, Wilhelm was as Christian missionary, and late in life, his impressions of China seemed to sour. However sympathetic to the spirit of China, Wilhelm's 'feeling tone' remained very much that of a European. Blofeld, by contrast, took to China like a fish in water. He assimilated the spirit of Chinese philosophy and lived it - without reservation.
Albeit brief, Blofeld's introduction makes engaging and fascinating reading, because distilled within its pages, are the quitessential elements of a way of living, thinking and feeling.
There is a strong Taoist flavour in Blofeld's account, a sense of
sublime totalities, whereas Wilhelm's translation is very much coloured by Confucian thinking. Of course, Blofeld respected the Confucian tradition - very much part of China (in his day), and he would have been the first to point out that an equal amount of Confucianb thought found its way into the Yi-Ching. Confucian glosses are present in the basic core text of the Yi Ching, but besides those, Blofeld has left aside the greater bulk of Confucian commentary matereal, focusing, instead, on the main text symbolism, giving better emphasis to the divination process itself.
Chinese never quite translates into 'black and white' English anyway, and this even more unlikely, given the peculiar idioms and syare not as obscure as they often seem, having an organic relationship in the 'kua' patterns of each respective hexagram. mbolism of the Yi Ching (usum ad delphi). Even so, the line texts
have an organic relationship determined by the 'kua' symbolism of each hexagram. Needless to say, some lines/line texts have given rise to a diversity of interpretations. In many cases, the brief notes appended to lines in Blofeld's text prove to be illuminating. Along with the introduction - explaining how the oracle ought to be used, the set of charts and tables at the end of Blofeld's text are quite helpful. This book is worth reading, just for the introduction, basically presenting the Yi-Ching as way of living with the cosmic flow - a mirror of the Tao itself.
Blofeld's text has a good feel to it. As he observes, while many religious systems seek to locate the truth in the infinite, a timeless context, the Yi-Ching seeks to find the truth or meaning in the flux, the tide of events and affairs. Fortune telling doesn't really come into it. The Yi Ching teaches that the universe unfolds according to immutable laws; the difference between the sage and the fool, is that the former seeks to align himself with those laws, whereas the fool opposes them. Being able to 'read off' certain things from the flow, or sense the seeds of things to come, is therefore the provence of the sage.

An enthusiastic I Ching

I have always admired John Blofeld's work, and for many years I used his I Ching as my primary resource with the oracle. It is an energetic, enthusiastic, and enjoyable translation, and Blofeld's sense of joy in using the oracle communicates itself through his pages, even amid the scholarship and prosaic detail of translation issues. Clearly, Blofeld's work could probably use a fresh setting and an updated voice, as Wilhelm's has received at the hands of Carol Anthony and Hanna Moog: Blofeld buys whole cloth the Confucian additions, emendations, and overlays that have been crusted onto the oracle's original text, and understanding of the oracle's purpose and practical ability as a personal insight guide (rather than a mere fortune-telling instrument) could be improved upon or expanded. But what Blofeld brought to the I Ching in the mid '60's was a fresh energy and a simple, intentionally "unliterary" voice, which was much needed at the time and which still has value. If you love the I Ching, then Blofeld's translation should have a place on your I Ching bookshelf.

Still the best version of the I Ching in English

I have six different translations of the I Ching. Wilhelm's is THE great encyclopedia of this ancient Chinese phenomenon when one wants to learn all about it in great depth. The I Ching or Book of Changes.

For everyday meditation and divination, Blofeld's version I Ching: The Book of Change (Compass) is still the best for me. Faithful to its most ancient sources, and translated directly from the ancient Chinese, it is as pure and simple as a Zen garden, using the clear imagery of the original Chinese; however, it still has many unobtrusive footnotes with helpful suggestions and background from the author. It doesn't overwrite, re-interpret or "modernize" the original texts, allowing the questioner to read the original meaning and images as they were and let the questioner decide what they symbolize in his/her particular situation. I've been amazed at how often the simple ancient imagery (oxcarts, sacrificial bowls, arrows, etc.) is more meaningful to me in answering my questions than the updated "interpretations" found in other versions which leave out the imagery.

A good secondary volume to Blofeld's is Browne's I Ching The I Ching or Book of Changes: A Guide to Life's Turning Points, which interprets much of the I Ching text through the eyes of Buddhism, frequently emphasizing the abnegation of the ego and the virtues of non-action, humility and equanimity - and it does omit a lot of the original imagery; nevertheless, it can be of help in interpreting the Blofeld text and is warmer and more personal in tone.

I'm pretty sure I won't be putting some of them into ...

The full title of this book is "How to Build Self-Discipline, Resist Temptations and Reach Your Long-Term Goals." It is filled with interesting ideas. I'm pretty sure I won't be putting some of them into practice (like the suggestion to take ice-cold showers), but I do understand the concept behind them.

While not a step-by-step guide, the book does give advice on how to change behavior; either eliminating an unwanted behavior or making a desired behavior a habit. Much of the book focuses on neuroplasticity, although that word does not appear in the text. While Meadows aims to avoid technical details (to allow the reader to get the most out of the book in the shortest time possible), it does have a few technical references. For those interested in learning more, the book is also well annotated.

If you find your mind gets in the way of your achievement, this book may encourage you and help you get your mind out of your way. If you are serious about building self-discipline, resisting temptations and reaching your long-term goals, you may need to supplement this book with some additional reading.

He has done it and writes from his own experience

If you are contemplating reading this, you are likely to already have the mindset that is ready for change, or you are looking for a way to do better in your life. Martin will help you: he has done it. The biggest plus to this book is that Martin uses examples form his own life, together with a lot of research (that is referenced) to support the statements he is making. The book is easy to read, the concepts are easy to grasp, and putting things into practice is not difficult. I have read quite a few self-published books, and I have to say that this is one of the best written, which means that annoying errors don't distract from the content. Even if all you want to do is to make a relatively minor change in your life it will still be a useful and motivating book to read. I did not check the sources for his research, but a lot of it sounded familiar to me from other sites/articles I've read. At times I found Martin a bit extreme - he fasts for most of the 24 hour daily cycle, allowing himself only a small window of 4-6 hours in which to eat. However, he makes it very clear that this is something he chooses to do for his own purposes and he does not advocate that this is a must. I particularly like the fact that after each chapter there is a one page summary of the main points - I've seen this done in other books, and find it extremely helpful, and of course it's a well documented method for embedding information in the memory. Highly recommended.

Something that every goal-minded individual should read!

If one seeks to achieve things, they must set goals, have a strategy and a vision. Meadows' book clearly explains in a simple, easy-to-understand way exactly what it takes to maintain self-discipline. By using a combination of the science, psychology, and philosophy behind self-discipline, he shows how anyone can achieve it by following some of the techniques he recommends. One of the things he explains is how to meditate. While i have read about different types of meditations before, I really enjoyed the way he explained it in such a simple manner, and made it easy to understand how to do it. Meadows gives several excellent examples for building self-discipline, including diet and exercise. I can relate to both of these issues, as well as probably many people that are interested in reading this book, as I have struggled with both of these over the years. Meadows' explanation of the Dunning-Kruger effect was my personal favorite part of the entire book, as it reminds me of someone I know (read: ex-sister-in-law). Ironically, this book tied in perfectly with another book that I was also reading about fasting every other day (the Dodo diet), so the advice in this book made perfect sense. I would recommend this book to anyone who has ever struggled with diet, exercise, money problems, or anyone who ever has a difficult time saying "no" to anyone or anything.
