Crowd funding know-how

At the time of this review we're just a couple days away from our Kickstarter launch for LucidBrake, and this book helped us prepare during the past few weeks in many ways. To have a successful campaign there are many details that need to be addressed, things people don't normally think of until they typically learn by trial and error. It's much better to catch those details deliberately ahead of time, and that's what this book has done for us. Crowd-funding is a really cool new way to help others, or yourself, to get a product or project launched, and this book provides a good kick start with the important details.

Crowdfund Investing for Dummies will keep you from being the dummy!

To start off, I just didn't quite "get" the whole concept of crowdfund investing. It was so...different...that I wasn't sure if it was fish or fowl. Its a new way of funding projects & startups that may not qualify for "traditional" funding. It uses social media too, and in a different way than most of us do. Most importantly, like all "For Dummies" books, it explained the concept in clear terminology.
While I'm not embarking on the reinvention of the pet rock, and have nothing in the works for crowdfunding to come into play personally, I feel much better understanding the concept. It's also a way for the "little guy" to make a difference with a relatively small investment, and then help fund something that is near and dear to them. I really like the concept once I understood it better.
Once again, a "For Dummies" book has prevented me from being the dummy. I'm glad I got the book, and it is definitely worth reading, even if you are not an entrepreneur or big time investor.

Excellent source material written in engaging, accessible style by very knowledgeable people

This impressive book is indispensable for anyone considering funding through crowds. Unlike many how to guides, this book was written by people who helped write the legislation that they discuss in the book. They also are experienced business-runners who have used the methods in the book. The importance of this cannot be understated. The authors' confidence and knowledge comes through in every page.
The cost to benefit ratio on this book makes it a no-brainer. Buy it now.
In a nutshell, the book describes how to work within a new SEC approved funding framework for investors seeking a return on their investment which employs a variant of the practice popularized by websites such as Kickstarter. A summary of the law is provided in the book, with an expanded treatment on a companion website. (Still, the authors urge retaining legal counsel, not only to ensure compliance but also to signal to investors that the business is run by serious folks. This is good advice, no one wants to run afoul of the SEC.)
I thought the organization was particularly strong, and liked the references to particular chapters in text. I found myself jumping around from one chapter to another to find out particular information, much like browsing Wikipedia. This is a good thing.
Beyond the technical stuff, the authors provide a great deal of useful "I wouldn't have thought of that" information. For instance, who to initially target, how to create a plausible business plan, and so on. I also enjoyed the fact that the book is written with a great deal of sympathy towards investors and is cognizant of the responsibilities that investment seekers bear towards their investors. The explanation of why the "all or nothing" model is best and fairest is a good example of this. The authors are not interested in promoting garbage get rich quick schemes and anyone looking for such a book will be quickly disabused of such notions within a few pages.
In sum, this book is a fantastic resource for anyone thinking of dipping their toe in the water. Some great info is available for free on the book's website (I'm not sure I can include it here, but a simple google should suffice), but anyone remotely serious will want to immediately get their own copy. As I mentioned at the outset, Crowdfund Investing for Dummies is a true rarity in that the authors basically started the segment.
Highly recommended.
