About the Author
Teresa Erickson is president and co-owner of Intermedia Communications Training, Inc. For the past twenty years, Teresa has designed and led communications workshops around the world. Born in Portugal, Teresa worked with the Voice of America for 17 years as a producer, editor, and host of VOA’s flagship public affairs program, broadcast worldwide to 90 million listeners a week.
Tim Ward is the author of seven books, including the best-selling What the Buddha Never Taught and Savage Breast: One Man’s Search for the Goddess. His travel stories have appeared in 13 anthologies, including Traveler’s Tales Best Travel Writing 2006, 2010, 2011 and 2012. Tim is also the publisher of Changemakers Books (an imprint of John Hunt Publishing). He also co-owns Intermedia Communications Training with Teresa Erickson, his wife and business partner. They live in Bethesda, Maryland.

I love big ideas but I am also a pragmatist

I am a first-time author with big plans to publish and then hit the speakers circuit. This book has been helpful with both my writing and my planning to take the podium. What I most value is the book's simplicity and clarity. No fancy jargon, no hyperbole. The authors have managed to share their insights and recommendations with a uncomplicated directness. I love big ideas but I am also a pragmatist, I need to know what to do with that big idea I have just read. They lay out some compelling thoughts and then make it very easy to put those thoughts into action. This book is not just a book. It's an essential tool that I find myself going back to time and again.

Great distillation of complex concepts

I liked how they use practical examples and non-examples, which show practitioners and aspiring practitioners how to do things well, and importantly, how NOT to do things (the World Bank example on page 11 was very good).
They try to distill complex concepts down into easy-to-remember methods and processes. Always helpful, as readers are likely to be people in jobs, who need to grasp things quickly on the run.
Am looking forward to an increased focus on social media. We particularly need to pay attention to the unique opportunities provided by social media , and the challenges that await the uninitiated in that sphere would be a welcome expansion to the work they're doing.

I'm always looking for ways to better explain my work to the general public

As a scientist, I'm always looking for ways to better explain my work to the general public. This well-written and succinct book is full of gems that have helped me communicate complex ideas in a way that everyday people find interesting. Soon after reading the book, I gave a talk about my research to an audience of 200 people in a small rural town. Much to my surprise and delight, the audience was engaged and excited. I'm sure that most of that reaction was due to my use of the tips and guidance in this book. Highly recommended.
